16 years ago today we opened the doors to Dublin's newest bookshop. That @gutterbookshop.bsky.social continues to thrive today brings me so much joy. We created something that brought people together & celebrated books & reading. I feel like I added something good to the world & I'm so proud of that.

A chara, - In January 1989, the British Minister Douglas Hogg stated that some solicitors were โ€œunduly sympathetic to the cause of the IRAโ€. Three weeks later Pat Finucane was murdered by loyalists. It is widely accepted in Ireland that there was a consequential link between these two events.

Will there be a similar recognition of the responsibility political leaders bear for inciting violence in the wake of the horrific arson attack on a centre for international protection applicants in Drogheda on Hallowen night, only days after the Tรกnaiste described migration numbers as โ€œtoo highโ€? - Is mise

The notion that difficult times inevitably lead to rising xenophobia is a myth. What leads to that is politics and media coverage.

Difficult times could easily lead to anti-billionaire sentiments instead because theyโ€™re the ones actually profiting from your misery - not random asylum seekers.

You didnโ€™t hear this from us, but the Old English word 'sibb' meant โ€œrelated by blood.โ€

This is where we get the 'sibling.'

And 'godsibb' essentially meant โ€œgodparent.โ€

Over time, it came to mean "close friend."

Now it is something we share w/ close friends...

'gossip.'

He never wanted to teach if he did he could've gone to another school. This is imported culture bullshit paid for by yank cash. And now we pay

I don't begrudge the school the funding - they are in a terrible position. But between keeping him locked up and now keeping him to court imposed restrictions he's costing a fortune. A seemingly unsolvable problem.

Election
commentary

Sir. - Much of the commentary on
the presidential election has focused
on trving to interpret the meaning be-
hind spoiled votes, and what they sug-
gest about the gap between parts of
the electorate and our political class.
Catherine Connolly's victory, how-
ever, points to an overlooked gap-the
one between voters and much of the
prevailing media consensus. More
than 900,000 people - the largest
number ever to support a presidential
candidate - voted for her despite
weeks of coverage often portraying
her views on neutrality, Nato, Pales-
tine, and prisoner rehabilitation as na-
ive. riskv or dangerous

Taken together. these results sug-
gest a public that feels misread from
the political and media spheres. Un-
less those gaps are honestly examined
as a whole, politicians and iournalists
may risk continuing to speak to each
other in circles. - Yours, etc.

Two humorous social media posts about cats believing their owners can control nature, like rain and sunlight.

Transcribed Text:

Feline_Tales

My cats have this meow that means โ€œplease come with me to fix thisโ€ after which theyโ€™ll lead me to the problem in question, usually a empty (or โ€˜emptyโ€™) food bowl or a closed door they want open. They look at the โ€˜problemโ€™, they look back at me, clear message.

What fascinates me is how this illustrates what they percieve as being in the realm of my โ€˜power.โ€™ I control the food, I control the door, sure, but my cats love to sit on the balcony in the sun, and it has happened plenty of times that on a rainy day they come get me, go to the balcony and show me... the rain. โ€œPlease fix thisโ€ they say. โ€œPlease get rid of the wetโ€

โ€œSilly kitty,โ€ I say, โ€œI canโ€™t control the rain.โ€ I then walk into the shower and turn on the rain.

purrfect_logic

I hope this is a universal cat owner experience. Every single night he begs me to turn the sun back on so he can watch birds on the balcony. I tell him no, I cannot do that.

But I can turn lights on and off in the house and heโ€™s fairly certain Iโ€™m just not applying myself properly here.

Lies, damned lies and reality TVย  โ€“ The Beacon Izzy Kamikaze discovered first hand that the media continues to fail minorities and instead prefers entertainment over justice.

We've known the dangers of reality TV ever since Nancy Campbell-Panitz was beaten to death by her ex on the night they appeared on the Jerry Springer show. 38 people have taken their own lives after taking part in reality TV.
