Opposing the Gaza genocide has meant being proven right about everything from the very beginning every step of the way, hating being proven right, and then having the liberals who kept yelling at you for your rightness slowly begin to acknowledge that you were right, while still finding excuses to hate you for being right anyway

as a helpless person in the west, whose only real power for change has been my voice and my vote, this has been the most frustrating part of the last two years

Gotta love a company with an established practive of union negociations now claiming that the union "does not have negociating rights" when it comes to hybrid working policy.

Um, yeah, my union absolutely has negociating rights regarding my working conditions. That's the raison d'รชtre of a union!*

Probably about how Catholics are "oppressed" because Irish society doesn't actively defer to the Catholic Church on every matter of importance as much as it used to.

I'm aware the Indo is trying to bait me, but they did succeed:

"So this is the thing now? Because Brian in accounts took the opportunity to buy a house in Leitrim during the (temporary) pandemic instead of renting a flat in Ballsbridge, his employer should take the hit?"

Um, yes. Absolutey yes.

Irish Independent extract from article titled "Enoch Burke wins Court of Appeal challenge over make-up of dismissal appeals panel", published 25th July 2025: "The judge said her finding, which was concurred with by Mr Justice Donald Binchy and Ms Justice Nuala Butler, was made due to the nature of Mr Christieโ€™s role in the ASTI.

She said Mr Christie had an โ€œinstitutional associationโ€ with remarks made by ASTI deputy general secretary Diarmuid De Paor in a newspaper interview that students should be generally referred to by their preferred pronoun.

The judge also said the instruction given by the then principal at Wilsonโ€™s Hospital closely mirrored advice the ASTI gave to schools on the use of names and pronouns for transitioning students.

โ€œThe position adopted by the ASTI executive runs counter to the appellantโ€™s position. In that circumstance, an apprehension of objective bias arises if Mr Christie remains on the disciplinary appeals panel,โ€ the judge said."

Enoch Burke wins Court of Appeal challenge over make-up of dismissal appeals panel Controversial schoolteacher Enoch Burke has won a legal challenge against the composition of a disciplinary appeals panel set up to consider his dismissal from Wilsonโ€™s Hospital School.

Can someone more expirienced with Law than me explain if I am correct to assume that a result of Enoch Burke winning this appeal is that the composition of the dismissal appeals broad can only include people whose institutions don't vocally support Trans kids? m.independent.ie/irish-news/c...

It is also going to be annoying how McGregor and Flatley having the same politics is going to be completely ignored by the politicial corrospondants.

Granted, it is harder in other countries, especially when the likes of the UK are criminalising protest. But here's the thing - if as many people in the UK felt about Palestine the way people in Ireland did, Palestine Action would never have being banned in the first place.

That's the reality imo.

Sure, people in other countries consider Israel's actions horrible and would support sanctions in a vaccuum, but in Ireland, while our Government is getting pulpits for doing the bare minimum, they are still in a constant battle against public sentiment to demonstrate they are doing enough.

This isn't because the Irish Govt is good, but they can't do anything less while governing a country where 80%+ accept what's happening in Gaza to be a genocide.

No major western power has that level of societal consensus - without it, the media & politicial class are inclined to try riding it out.

I mean, to be blunt, there obviously isn't enough opposition in most countries.

Why is the Irish Government one of the only Western governments even entertaining the idea of a ban on good imports from illegal Israeli settlements?

Because they know public opinion here demands at least *something*

Warm enough to actually enjoyably do stuff outside, not hot enough to expose a large chunk of the population to serious health issues or to even make them pour sweat uncomfortably (with the right clothing).

Mostly dry, with a couple of wet days so things don't dry out *too* much.

Perfection.

Facebook post from The Telegraph newspaper - "Malak Hani graduated from school in Gaza with the second highest grade of any student in the Palestinian territories.

The 19-year-old received a full scholarship to the University of Cambridge this year.

But months later, she remains trapped in the rubble of Gaza and tangled inside a web of British bureaucracy.

Honestly, my own fault for checking Facebook and excepting anything better, but there are plenty of folk making comments underneath this that deserve to get in the sack* honestly.

Completely disgusting racism directed at a student in the midst of a genocide the UK are actively facilitating

Because my suspicion is that this "Gen Z Stare" talking point is just coming from the same place, and it's hard to take it seriously if it's coming from the kind of middle management that feel entitled to expect a response from colleagues out of hours for something that is self-evidently not urgent.

At the weekend, I read an article in The New York Times about โ€˜the Gen Z stareโ€™ with a sense of recognition. The Gen Z stare is when a Zoomer is asked a question in a public setting, and instead of answering verbally, they deliver a passive-aggressive stare.

For context - this was the definition in the Examiner article. That "Out of Hours" bit was a later section where they seemed to just be taking the oppertunity to go off on one about Gen Z feeling "entitled", which is what makes me suspicious about this concept. www.irishexaminer.com/opinion/colu...

To be blunt - I genuinely do not see what the big deal is if that query were answered tomorrow, there is no indication that it is urgent.

And yeah, I do genuinely think that "out of hours" behaviour is disrespectful on principle. Genuine emergencies, sure, but that's not being described here.

Bffr, the UK government knew full well that the police would do stuff like this when they proscribed a non-violent direct action protest group like Palestine Action.

You always have to assume that the powers and scope you give to the police would have the potential to be abused.

More generally, I have discussed new workplace behaviours with various friends who are employers or senior managers in different walks of life, ranging from blue-chip corporate echelons to small businesses. The broad consensus is that there is a lack of understanding of how to behave in a professional context, and a marked interest in what works best for Gen Z employees.

To take just one example, a refusal to take messages or calls outside of strictly defined working hours. So, if you forget to ask your junior employee a question before 6pm because your head is over a document, it will have to wait until the next day. Two minutes past six is too late, loser.

If you supported the sanctions against Russia for their war and their crimes in Ukraine, but oppose anything remotely similar against Israel - your stance is based on nothing except racist/islamophobic prejudice.
