I've read enough history to know two things: (1) you can never tell which useless action will be the last turn of the key, and (2) nothing ever matters until it does. Small, good acts — when repeated over and over again by small people history will never remember — move more mountains than you know.

My church skews old, white, and MAGA; but everyone celebrated the marriage of a black man and a white woman among us, and mixed-race grandkids and adopted grandkids are normal and loved. Banging on about racist Republicans is inaccurate and counterproductive. They aren’t, and they know they aren’t.

There’s probably a regional bias. I know the Old Confederacy is a different animal. Implicit bias surely plays into other regions, but it’s also possible to overstate the influence of race.

It’s the only reason I still *occasionally* poke my head up on FB to get shot at. I attend a conservative evangelical church weekly, even fill the pulpit sometimes. I try to provide a permission structure for fellow travelers who might be wavering in their heart of hearts. No idea if it’s working. 😂

I know a three time Trump-voting veteran who hates Democrats like you’d never believe. He told me a few weeks ago that the NG deployments make him nervous, and asked if I thought we were close to civil war. Trump is burning all his bridges.

I’m not sure how this *doesn’t* happen unless the electorate legit breaks for MAGA in ‘26 and ‘28. If not, Trump & Co. will try to hold power using every dirty trick in the book. It will get ugly, and they’ll fail because they’re buffoons with no actual support. Americans will want retribution.

This is such small potatoes. Nothing they say aligns with anything real. So it won’t work, and they have nothing else. NOTHING.

The one and only reason I *might* believe this is that a lot of GOP politicians feel trapped in this thing. We bash them for cowardice when they criticize Trump privately and anonymously and then salute in public. But this does suggest to me that they’ll take an exit if it looks safe.

Also: most Americans have no genetic fear of the military, and a lot of genetic confidence in the rule of law and their right to vote. Even most rank/file MAGA are bamboozled into thinking we need the troops to protect those exact same rights. A fascist cabal at the top can’t change this overnight.
