And the moral of this story is that every single US citizen, no matter age (I was in my early 30s when it happened to me), is just a hair's breadth away from financial ruination due to a major or even minor (such as a $1,500 ambulance ride) health event. The alternative is to die.

It's a true story.

Since it was emergency care I really didn't have the opportunity to choose in-network providers.
That $100,000 worth of outstanding unpaid medical bills stayed on my credit report for 10 years.

I could never get an itemized bill from the hospital (they said they did not have to provide one!). I spent about two years battling the insurance company (Cigna) over the many, many denied claims with very limited success. Seems that a lot of the doctors, nurses, labs were "out of network."

So, after the dust settled and I was at home recovering for 12 weeks, I started getting all kinds of medical bills. Turned out that after insurance paid their part I owed roughly $100,000 in debts to various labs, doctors, the hospital, and for things I couldn't even comprehend.

In 2011 I collapsed at work due to a catastrophic heart event. Luckily, I worked at a major university/research center/medical school or I would have died. Anyway, I had to have emergency open heart surgery. I did have relatively good health ins thru my employer.

Thanks to #TrumpShutdown 45,000-46,000 miliyary personnel, engineers, contractors, civilians employed by the Fed government at Redstone Arsenal #Huntsville #Alabama are now furloughed, unemployed, fearful of being permanently terminated and even worse ARE NOT GETTING A PAYCHECK.
