I don't think we fully grasped yet how important solar will be as an energy source.

Factcheck: 16 misleading myths about solar Carbon Brief factchecks 16 of the most common myths about solar power

Great work here from @carbonbrief.org , debunking common myths about solar power.

The reason that solar power makes so much sense is fundamental physics - it takes energy in its most useful form, as soon as it arrives on Earth, before it's "taxed" in entropy. Making use of it is a slam-dunk win.

Revealed: heat pump myths and benefits you need to know Heat pumps promise lower bills and greener homes, but here's how misinformation and challenges are slowing their rollout

A key planning restriction that heat pumps need to be one metre from a neighbour's property has been lifted.

Part of government Warm Homes Plan to decrease bills & accelerate the take up of the low-carbon technology.

Atmospheric CO2 has passed 430 parts per million.

The last time atmospheric CO2 was at 430 ppm was during the ancient Pliocene Era, three to five million years ago, and humans didn’t exist.

Gas boilers now biggest source of air pollution in central London Toxin levels from cars, buses and lorries have fallen significantly in recent years because of the capital’s congestion charge and ultra-low emission zone

I’m in The Times today:

β€œWhile transport emissions have dropped, the vast majority of homes still rely on gas heating, which emits harmful nitrogen oxides.”

🚨 NEW RESEARCH: Gas boilers now produce ~72% of NOx emissions in central London.

Switching from gas to hydrogen for heating could cost Β£600M in extra environmental damage vs. heat pumps.

Time to rethink urban air pollution priorities.

It's a myth that "hydrogen combustion produces only water vapour".

Burning hydrogen results in harmful NOx emissions. In urban areas this becomes the dominant source of NOx pollution if we switched to hydrogen for heating.

Shocking to see H2Heat project financed by the EU peddling such untruths πŸ‘‡

Does it make sense to rip out a new gas boiler and replace it with a heat pump? From carbon perspective yes: Replacing a new gas boiler with a heat pump in the UK cuts emissions by 77-86%.

This includes embodied emissions from manufacturing.

A heat pump offset its embodied carbon after 13 months.

πŸ“£ New article by me in @plosclimate.org!

We can’t decarbonize energy by focusing on supply aloneβ€”we must tackle demand too.

πŸ”Ή Efficiency has cut more emissions than renewables
πŸ”Ή Smarter demand = less fossil fuel reliance
πŸ”Ή Cleanest energy is energy we don’t use

Again and again I hear on social media and read in newspapers that gas replaced coal in the UK.

That's simply not the case.

In 2024:

πŸ“‰ 43% less electricity generation was from gas than in 2000. πŸ“ˆ Wind + solar increased more than 100x
🚫 Coal is now zero

You could watch the news 24/7 & never know that…

Our planet’s at its hottest in 120,000 years.
Methane levels are at their highest in MILLIONS of years.
CO2 levels are at their highest in 3 MILLION years.
Leading to a BILLION people killed within decades.

The media is distracting us to death.

Not long ago coal provided almost 40% of our electricity.

Today it is 0%.

Coal’s decline was achieved without switching to gas, driven instead by renewables & demand reduction.

Wind and solar experienced massive growth as coal entered terminal decline.
