My 1 and a half star review of The Smashing Machine, starring Dwayne Johnson and Emily Blunt. The screencap cuts off the full review & so this is just an excerpt: I don't think Benny Safdie wants to make movies. He certainly doesn't want to write them. It's an absolute shame, because the Rock is doing such beautiful work here. This film is unworthy of what he's tapped into here. It's just... even if you had a more wandering, aimless plan for this film, it's CRAZY to not regroup and to throw away the great work your lead is doing like that I'm often frustrated when a film points at something, but doesn't have the courage to explore it. Safdie doesn't even point. He simply pans the camera over the abuses within the sport, in the inherent chronic pain and suffering it requires and worsens, the reality of domestic violence and what seems to be (unintentionally portrayed in the film, mind you, because I don't have any evidence that Safdie thought about this or anything) men's inability to help a male peer through it.

I finally saw The Smashing Machine and the Rock was Acting™️, bitch! Which made me all the more upset that that was ✨️nothing✨️.
