UPDATE: The Indiana legislature announced that, across the state's public universities, it will immediately eliminate 75 programs, suspend/teach-out 101, and force 232 to consolidate or be eliminated. Not surprisingly, these closures disproportionately affect arts, humanities, and social science.

I should get credit for not attending Jeff Bezo's wedding even though I wasn't invited.

Jeff Bezos is worth $230 billion and is reportedly spending $20 million on a three-day wedding in Venice while sailing around on his $500 million yacht. If he can afford to do that, he can afford a wealth tax and to pay Amazon workers a living wage. Hello?

This is oligarchy. This is obscene.

While 60% live paycheck to paycheck & kids go hungry, Jeff Bezos, worth $230 billion, goes to Venice on his $500 million yacht for a $20 million wedding & spends $5 million on a ring while his real tax rate is just 1.1%.

End this oligarchy.

Professor just told me that her student nephew says:

Students are paying for "better" AI programs (i.e., not the free versions), b/c they do a better job at a high quality, undetectable paper.

So, yet again, wealthier students will benefit most from the system. Sigh.

Finally, at long last, some serenity to think, reflect, & regain a sense of self after a really challenging academic year that was only exasperated by the uncritical hyperbolic, unprecedented system-wide push for students to use ChatGPT.edu w/o any prior warning to faculty teaching online classes.

There are a couple of kids in my nephews's class who weren't born in the US, and the class has decided (w/o teacher input) that if ICE shows up in they're all going to pretend not to speak English. 10yos reinventing "I am Spartacus" because they don't want their friends to get disappeared.
