16.07.2025 21:22 β π 1 π 0 π¬ 0 π 0Thanks for sharing Sim. Been to Fairlight Glen before but have never made it down to Covehurst Bay.
15.07.2025 22:47 β π 1 π 0 π¬ 2 π 0Something funky going on here! Small Scabious with a series of unified stems that collectively produced a solitary flowerhead, that then split out into several solitary stems again, each with its own terminal flowerhead... must be the beer in Norfolk!
15.07.2025 14:55 β π 28 π 2 π¬ 5 π 0Thanks Ross. Seems to be a lot around at the moment.
11.07.2025 13:38 β π 1 π 0 π¬ 0 π 0When combined, both these features are larger than your typical Japanese but smaller than your giant knotweed. Therefore this plant is most likely to be the hybrid Bohemian knotweed. #invasiveinsects #invasiveplants (4/4)
11.07.2025 01:59 β π 0 π 0 π¬ 0 π 0The Bohemian knotweed in these photos has a mixture of the squared leaf bases of Japanese and the cordate leaf bases of giant knotweed. The size of the plant and its leaves are also characteristic, the plant is around 3.5m tall and the some of the leaves are larger than 17cm. (3/4)
11.07.2025 01:58 β π 0 π 0 π¬ 1 π 0In this instance, the species of knotweed is not Japanese knotweed (Reynoutria japonica) but is actually Bohemian knotweed (Reynoutria x bohemica) the hybrid between giant knotweed (Reynoutria sachalinensis) and Japanese knotweed as it has features intermediate of both parents. (2/4)
11.07.2025 01:55 β π 0 π 0 π¬ 1 π 0Double whammy while on holiday in New England. Japanese beetle (Popillia japonica) on knotweed (Reynoutria sp.). Both are non-native species in the northeastern US. The Japanese beetle first arrived in the US on plants from Japan as part of 1916 Worldβs Fair. #invasiveinsects #invasiveplants (1/4)
11.07.2025 01:54 β π 5 π 0 π¬ 2 π 0Set a dozen batologists free in Broadland & rightly anticipate a few interesting bramble records.. not a new-to-GB waterlily. Nymphaea candida has small flowers with erect petals, filaments wider than anthers & concave stigmatic disc. Leaves with anastomosing veins at edges. @bsbibotany.bsky.social

19.06.2025 14:53 β π 2 π 0 π¬ 1 π 0Interesting bramble growing in scrub next to some ancient woodland in Kent at the weekend. Bit of a bramble novice but perhaps Series Glandulosi @bramblebotanist.bsky.social? (1/2)
19.06.2025 14:52 β π 4 π 0 π¬ 1 π 0Chaenotheca hispidula, a really smart pinhead lichen at Houghton Park today. Immersed thallus, greeny yellow pruinose base to fruiting head, and relatively large globose spores. First county record since 1974.

08.06.2025 15:14 β π 0 π 0 π¬ 2 π 0Usnea medulla is K+ yellow, Pd (not attempted) and UV (not attempted). Appears to be both sorediate and isidiate, medulla was not lax and holdfast black. Given it was found on an Oak twig and the lack of U. wasmuthii records in the county. The species is likely U. subfloridana. (2/2).
08.06.2025 15:12 β π 2 π 0 π¬ 1 π 0Came across this Usnea on a broken Oak twig in some secondary woodland bordering a disused sand quarry in Kent. Think it might be Usnea subfloridana. (1/2)
