My students love Cramerโ€™s rule. They like to look back on all their algebra work and see how this approach solves all 2x2 systems from previous classes. The fact that it works beyond is something of a bonus for us. Here is our justification for it:

Scientific notation is so much fun! Just show them the powers of ten video and hook them and the vast size of exponential numbers and the amazing infinitesimals of the atomic universe!!

Completing the Square Visualisation A simple visualisation tool to help students visualise the process of completing the square and understand the origins of the name of the process.

Get to teach completing the square tomorrow with a Geometric perspective!

Shared this proof of Heron's formula today while playing symphony no. 9. I faded in the steps to the music and then had students discuss the steps. It was fun!

I was going over a test today and the kids realized it was out of 67 pointsโ€ฆit was a fun moment!

Iโ€™m going to incorporate this number in as many tests as I can!

Difference of Squares Difference of Squares

I appreciate that my student has brought Redbull to the AMC math competition. That is dedication. ๐Ÿ˜€

(2/2) When I use paper to track retakes:

1) It encourages conversation. Students come up and sign up. We chat. Itโ€™s great.

2) It requires intent. There is something special (still) about signing your name.

3) Itโ€™s easy to track and annotate. The binder is right there. I can mark easily.

(1/2) I spent a long time setting up a digital system for tracking and encourage test retakes. I used it for years, especially since 2020, but this year I went low tech: but paper and a binder. It has been fantastic.

Great question. Can I post an answer or is that spoiling it?

03.11.2025 13:07 โ€” ๐Ÿ‘ 1    ๐Ÿ” 0    ๐Ÿ’ฌ 1    ๐Ÿ“Œ 0

I would still teach it, because I also want my students to see when, and when not, to apply a tool. Itโ€™s like helping students do 1000 - 999 with, and without, stacking and borrowing. Seeing the contrast in algorithms on a particular problem is really fun and interesting!

03.11.2025 13:05 โ€” ๐Ÿ‘ 1    ๐Ÿ” 0    ๐Ÿ’ฌ 0    ๐Ÿ“Œ 0

This is great! If anyone would like to speak with my high school students, please let me know!

This looks interesting! Are we trying to solve for x given that 2a + b = c?

Also, I followed your link, but where can I see the previous problems like this?

(2/2) I use the fact that (x - (a - bi))(x - (a+ bi)) = x^2 -2ax + (a^2 +b^2) and I like this because it emphasizes the sum of squares. Your student's approach simplifies to the same short cut and I love it! Way to go!!!

(1/2) I really like method 2. I haven't been rewriting it as the difference of squares and I think my students will love it! Thanks!

(2/2) Seeing students apply their ideas to algorithms is still one of the best aspects of teaching. Here is the student algorithm that I was able to share back with the class today. Sometimes long division is a better choice than synthetic division! Also, these topics rule.

(1/2) Aren't students amazing? I showed how to use synthetic division to factor a polynomial. The first question I get is about how to avoid synthetic division and use long division! Then I realized I had a similar question three years ago! Here is the original approach:

Found a phone outside a local barbershop. The owner sent their son to get it. He was my student!

We said hello and then I sat down to get my haircut. The barber was also my former student!

Feeling lucky to have made so many connections over the years.
