An elderly fortune teller/astrologer sits at the side of the Girivalam route around Mount Arunachala in Tiruvannamalai, Tamil Nadu, India with a caged guinea pig, a diagram of a large hand for palm reading and a deck of 27 cards representing the Indian cosmic system and featuring images of Hindu deities and symbols laid out on a plastic mat. Eli Josiyam (rat astrology) is a traditional form of South Indian fortune-telling. When a customer asks for a reading, the astrologer writes down their name and details in his notebook. The guinea pig is released from the cage and trained to pick one card from the deck with its teeth. This card is believed to correspond to the customer's fortune and fate relating to career, marriage, health and education, which the astrologer then interprets. Kili Josiyam (parrot astrology) has traditionally been a more popular practice here, with locals associating enlightened parrots with the Tiruvannamalai Temple. However, frequent seizures by the Forest Department under wildlife conservation laws has gradually led to the use of guinea pigs which seem not to be similarly protected. Que Será, Será (Whatever Will Be, Will Be) was written by Jay Livingston and Ray Evans and first published in 1955. Doris Day introduced it in the Alfred Hitchcock film The Man Who Knew Too Much (1956), singing it as a cue to their onscreen kidnapped son. The song won an Oscar, reached #2 on the US charts, topped the UK charts, and was famously covered by Sly and the Family Stone in 1973. I took this photo in low light and in motion, so it was only later that I was stunned to notice the text on the roped box covered by the saffron cloth, "After A Full Belly, All Is Poetry", a quote by Irish-American Pulitzer prize-winning author Frank McCourt.
