In colonial times, it was bad luck to marry a gal who wasn't already with-child. He needed proof he has land (or a trade) and can make it work, she needed proof she can bear children to help them.

reminds me that recently a FB Angel found a pic of great-grandma as a girl, and is mailing it to Mom. As tweens, Abbie looks so much like her daughter at 12. And adult photos of Abbie 30ish and daughter (gt-aunt) at 60 look pretty similar too.
