Question for academic soc/crim/anthro/etc folk...
I'm teaching an undergrad seminar: Crime, punishment & Society. Want/need a section on CECOT & ongoing "state of emergency" in El Salvardor. Any recs for academic or journalists writing?
Also, any recs on ICE & ICE detention facilities? Thanks

Opinion | Ehud Olmert on Israelโs Catastrophic War in Gaza
And, setting aside LA, people in Gaza are still being killed, starved, and (further) displaced. And violence in the West Bank too.
This interview (criticizing Netanyahu) with a former PM of Israel is definitely worth the read.

For example, at rally for David Huerta (the union leader who was being detained), there were lots of people. What were we doing? Some chanting, some listening to speakers, and a fair amount of dancing and signing along to the live band. Had almost a party or festival atmosphere....

Been away from soc media, but feel need to return.
I live in LA & feel the need to say:
The protests have 99.9% been peaceful exercise of constitutional rights.
Much media coverage makes it look like a war-like, siege existence in LA. That is NOT THE CASE AT ALL!

Opinion | Kendrick Lamarโs Halftime Show Was Political Art, if You Knew Where to Look
With an audience of over 120 million people, the performance broke viewership records. But at times it seemed designed to speak directly to me.
Yes to this op-ed!!

Trump halts enforcement of US law banning bribery of foreign officials
President directs DoJ to pause prosecutions under Foreign Corrupt Practices Act, and issues pardon to Rod Blagojevich
More worried about other things from the new regime (Gaza, USAID food aid, NIH indirect costs, executive power).
But this seems important. It's all 'flood the zone', but wonder if this change is a change they really want and are hoping 4 minimal attention.

The presidentโs proposal wasnโt serious, but it was dangerous.
"Parts of the Israeli right have long dreamed of expelling Palestinians from their land, a mad ambition thatโs only grown more intense and widespread since Oct. 7. Now Trump has taken this once-taboo idea and rendered it [legitimate]."

The presidentโs opponents, whoever they are, cannot expect a return to the Constitution as it was.
J. Bouie: "..trying to instantiate an anti-constitutional theory of executive power that would make the president supreme over all other branches of government. They are doing so in service of a plutocratic agenda of austerity and the upward redistribution of wealth"

I'm not surprised, but still, holy hell:
"Trump claims Palestinians have 'no alternative' but to leave Gaza during his Oval Office meeting with Netanyahu" - from NBC news and also saw it on NY Times.
