I miss when you could post Brave Norman Rockwell Townsperson and the caption could be, like, β€œR.E.M was wrong to leave β€˜Fretless’ off of Out of Time” instead of β€œThe secret police should stop murdering people.”

Grieved by the horrific events that have unfolded in Tumbler Ridge, BC. As an educator in British Columbia, this does hit close to home. I’m grateful for first responders and also for local and national media that have handled this with compassion and resisted sensationalizing a tragedy.

Our hearts are in Tumbler Ridge tonight with the families of those who have lost loved ones.

Government will ensure every possible support for community members in the coming days, as we all try to come to terms with this unimaginable tragedy.

I really wish there was a column in teacher observation forms for "were students smiling and laughing?" because, at the end of the day, that might matter the most

Following the killing of AFGE Member Alex Pretti and the subsequent slanderous rhetoric that followed from top Trump administration officials, AFGE National President Everett Kelley issued the following statement:

β€œYesterday, AFGE brought together labor and faith leaders from Minneapolis and across the nation to mourn our fallen brother from Local 3669, Alex Pretti. We honored his life and legacy and lifted up his family, his friends, his union, Minneapolis, and our nation in prayer.

β€œToday, we demand accountability.

β€œIn the immediate aftermath of Alex’s killing, DHS Secretary Kristi Noem betrayed the public trust by slandering the good name of our union brother and calling him a β€œdomestic terrorist.” Alex Pretti was a patriotic ICU nurse at a VA hospital who devoted his life to serving America’s veterans. That claim was reckless, defamatory, and unsupported by the facts. Noem was preceded in this false statement by Stephen Miller, Deputy White House Chief of Staff, who is also the architect of the chaotic and failed immigration policy in Minnesota.

β€œOur demand is clear: Department of Homeland Security Secretary Kristi Noem, who was responsible for carrying out the policy that led to Alex’s needless killing, and Deputy White House Chief of Staff Stephen Miller, the architect of that policy, must resign immediately. If they refuse, President Trump must dismiss them.

The American Federation of Government Employees, which represents border patrol officers at the National Border Patrol Council, calls on Kristi Noem and Stephen Miller to resign or be fired

My most boring class to teach, AP Government, is on our unit on the federal bureaucracy & federal agencies right now, where the College Board material places an enormous weight on expertise-driven independence and the principal-agent problem, hard for the kids to square with ICE/CBP agency actions.

It isn’t lost on many of us that the people pretending their 2nd amendment fetish was about preserving the right to stand against a tyrannical regimeβ€”who spent both terms of the Obama admin (and every year since) screaming warnings of the government coming to take their gunsβ€”are now cravenly silent.

Social media just makes this an uphill battle even more than it normally would be. I work hard to convince 60 evangelicals in a Sunday school class that the immigration system is unjust, and evangelical Josh Howerton has 1.8 million followers he can pepper with short media to defend the system.

They murdered Good and Pretti, a poet and a nurse, one whose last words were β€œI’m not mad,” another whose last act was shielding another. Because of course that’s who they killed. Everyday people.

24.01.2026 21:30 β€” πŸ‘ 721    πŸ” 182    πŸ’¬ 7    πŸ“Œ 5

Alex Pretti's gun is like Renee Good's car: irrelevant to the central fact that they were murdered by ICE. ICE wants us to debate whether Pretti should have been carrying because that avoids the central fact. Pro-carry, anti-carry--that has as much to do w/ his murder as his fashion choices. Zero.

i honestly don't know what this administration would do if confronted with a national mass movement

would they get scared and back down? would they pull out machine guns?

Just for a little historical context, the first planned march from Selma to Montgomery in 1965 was to demand answers about the death of protestor Jimmie Lee Jackson.

I can't put into words the feeling of watching our government, a hive of evil antisocial filth, the absolute worst humanity has to offer, colliding with the best. Ordinary people trying to help each other, risking everything to stand up for what's plainly, unambiguously fair and right. It's unreal

It shouldnβ€˜t get lost that NPS removed interpretive panel talking about climate change at Fort Sumter this week too. In the next few days we’re going to start hearing about all the other NPS signage that has been removed and it’s going to be ugly.
