John Buscema was the renowned brother, with his beautiful lines and classic style, but I personally always gravitated towards Sal, with his more angular, expressive style. I feel he opened the path to others like Kevin O’Neill and Tim Sale

Green goblin, having been hit, extends beyond the panel outline of a first pagewide panel, and hits the wall and slumps further down it over the progression of the bottom three evenly sized vertical panels. He’s physically lower in each subsequent one, despite differing angles and distances
A nice panel grid—easily stuff due to its aggressively “fixed” nature—is bounded through demonically, stretching out an inevitable horror
A horizontal pagewide pane at both the top and bottom of the page show Peter and Mary jane’s reactions to the circumstances, while between them, in the middle layer of the page, three vertical panels showing Harry’s choice to stay unbalanced are weighted as a progression down by connecting through colour the top of the left one with the upper panel, and the bottom of the right with the lower panel, though the panels themselves are rendered level
Sal Buscema was a splendid character artist who (vitally; unexpectedly) found a swingin figure energy for spider-man in the 90s—bringing the rhythm back, to make a whole other domestic setup feel foundational—but it wasn’t just that—he was also such a fine panelsman. Snap ur fingers:

Foi ali que eu comecei a entender o Sal Buscema.
Nos anos 1990, eu não me esqueço de quando botaram o Bill Sienkiewicz pra arte-finalizar o Sal, no Homem-Aranha. Foi durante uns dois anos? Saiu de novo no Brasil há pouco em SAGA DO CLONE.
Buscema + Sienkiewicz = Pós-modernidade total.
Tem um trecho de MARVEL COMICS: A HISTÓRIA SECRETA que conta o dia em que Sal Buscema foi chamado, basicamente, de ultrapassado. Ainda nos anos 1980.
Ele respondeu fazendo uma edição do Hulk com arte detalhadíssima.

Sal e o irmão mais velho, John, chegaram nessa síntese por caminhos diferentes. E assim faziam 50, 60, 80 páginas por mês.
Quadrinista da Marvel de hoje faz 20 por mês sofrendo. As exigências são outras. Pagam um pouquinho melhor, mas só um pouquinho.
Quadrinho paga muito pouco. O artista tem que desenvolver um estilo sintético que cumpra a função - que você sinta um soco, uma emoção, que entenda a história - e que seja rápido de desenhar.
Porque, pra viver de quadrinho, você tem que fazer vááárias páginas por mês.
Encontrei um leitor de quadrinhos mais velho. Meu professor no colégio. Ele me disse que adorava o Homem-Aranha - especificamente o Homem-Aranha do Sal Buscema. Fiquei sem entender.
Com o tempo, eu entendi.
Quem viveu a Marvel dos anos 80, via Abril, sabe: uma em cada duas páginas era do Sal Buscema.
Hulk, Homem-Aranha, Capitão América, Novos Mutantes, Rom.
Mais Hulk: ele desenhou 137 edições de Hulk.
Eu não suportava gibi do Sal Buscema.
