Hey Geometry teachers! Check this out making parabolic solar collectors, and then more useful “compound solar collector”. Can you follow along with the geometric construction?

Four complementary pairs of solutions to Apollonius's problem; the given circles are black.

Four complementary pairs of solutions to Apollonius's problem; the given circles are black.

I will also submit this as a great example of #mathart

Here we have 8 solutions to the Apollonius problem. Given any 3 circles, draw a fourth that is at a tangent to each.

💯. Especially love the message in the beginning suggesting going “off script” for the 14 practices. Here’s my favorite four of the fourteen:

AAPT 2024 - AI in k12

A reminder that LLMs are fundamentally the wrong class of model for many applications.

Often, a better choice is a simple database, an FAQ, or just good notes.

If you want interactive personalized learning, good luck to you... just don't use an LLM as a computation engine.

It’s like that parachute game in gym class, you know, where you bounce balls in the air (popcorn)? Except, the teacher is the only one holding the parachute, the math problems are the balls, and half the kids are on their third bathroom break of the day.

I was devastated to not find any of Vi Hart's videos on youtube. I'm sure because of harassment, what a terrible place youtube can be.
BUT found their Vimeo channel: vimeo.com/vihart
Phew.
BTW, share these videos with your students, they haven't seen any of them and they are truly wonderful.

If they have limited time to work on homework, I wouldn't blame Ss for spending that time on classes that require the homework to be done for a grade. But that work would be done over mine. I've had this happen. Might be unavoidable, but I don't control those other Ts.

There's something to be said for practicing at home and explicitly valuing that practice.

I wonder if it's a chicken and the egg problem for these students.
