Keir Starmer The Left ignored immigration fears for too long. It's time to give communities back control Only a plan for patriotic national renewal led by Labour will counter the rise of the populist Right

The first essential part in doing that is in recognising where some on the Left went wrong on the issue of immigration. There is no doubt that for years, Left-wing parties, including my own, did shy away from people's concerns around illegal immigration. It has been too easy for people to enter the country, work in the shadow economy and remain illegally.

Equally, the belief that uncontrolled legal migration was nothing but good news for an economy should never have been accepted on the Left. It is not compassionate Left-wing politics to rely on labour that exploits foreign workers and undercuts fair wages.

To counter it, we must make and win the case for patriotic national renewal, based on enduring British values. Our country is still the proud, tolerant, diverse island it has always been, full of fierce and fair-minded Britons. True patriotism means choosing renewal for the common good rather than stoking grievances and seeking to divide.

Well, this is a hot mess of dog whistles and utter nonsense. For a speech claiming to tackle "toxic" and "poisonous" rhetoric Starmer leans heavily into pandering to the usual misinformation about migrants and portraying anti-immigration ideals as "patriotic"

Whether or not digital ID is a good long-term policy, the politics of it are that Labour just set up a battle with its own party and all the others, promising to achieve something this scheme probably can't, at an obvious actual and opportunity cost.

Personally, I don't feel great about my country being involved in genocide, and I think the government should be accountable for it.🤷‍♀️ Maybe that's just me.

When you continually blame someone else, that's not a great first step in taking accountability. If Labour wanted to tackle bigotry rather than using Reform's language, that might be a good first step. Instead, tepid centrism is more worried about looking Blairite rather than meaningful change.

That, or you know maybe I don't like giving bombs to be dropped on civilians in the middle east, and I don't like Powellite language. Could be either.🤷‍♀️

It is exactly this lack of accountability, that is why Labour are where they are. Paving the way for Farage and neglecting to tackle this country's problems at a deeper level.

If you think Labour won't get in because of us, then perhaps you need to work out whose fault that is for not winning people over with all this time in power.

The lack of a wealth tax. The watering down of a Hillsborough Law, that would give power to us all. The growth of unregulated AI, which puts our futures at risk. But hey, as long as any party wearing blue doesn't get in, it doesn't matter if the one in red acts the same.🤷‍♀️

International respect is very funny. Hard to gain when you blindly follow the most right-wing regime America's had. Don't forget the many who are still in poverty. The LGBT community and migrants whose rights are being kicked around using Farage's language for the he'll of it.

Well maybe if Labour had some values, or an ounce of credibility, they wouldn't be haemorrhaging votes to Reform, the Greens, and potentially, Corbyn's new party. It is too early to judge Polanski in power, the evidence is everywhere as to what Starmer in power looks like.
