A remarkably disheartening thing is you get the sense there are a handful of genuine historic fork in the road moments of what kind of country we want in our lifetime, and I still canโ€™t shake how much during the height of Covid we had a decision of what lessons weโ€™d all take from it and whatโ€ฆ

we are long past the point where democrats should be doing cutesy dialogue with trump or other republicans. it doesnt fucking work. be blunt. be clear. most people dont follow politics and theyre not going to take the time to decode your cute little coy barb. just fucking say stuff.

saw somebody yesterday refer to "soft republicans" that could hypothetically be turned to our side if we just reach out to them hard enough and i'm not sure how to tell you this but those do not exist

What does DHS do with unlimited resources and unchecked power?
ย
They kill people and detain children.
ย
DHS is the greatest threat to the homeland. We must MELT ICE and dismantle DHS.

AOC: "Extreme level of wealth inequality leads to social instability and drives authoritarianism, right-wing populism, and really dangerous domestic internal politics. That is a direct outcome of the failure of democracies over decades to deliver."

AOC and Warren join forces in high-profile child care push ahead of midterms As Republicans urge Americans to have more children but offer few supportive policies, Democrats believe reducing child care costs could be a winning message.

When only the wealthy can afford peace of mind for their children, we've turned childhood into a privilege, not a promise.

I am proud to lead the Child Care for Every Community Act with @warren.senate.gov to cap childcare costs and fight for universal childcare.

How Not to Defeat Authoritarianism Moderation used to help Democrats win, but its advantages now have been greatly exaggerated.

This @bostonreview.bsky.social piece by @adambonica.bsky.social and @jakemgrumbach.bsky.social is an absolute must-read, as are many of the responses to it.

Spread this one far and wide.

The Means-Testing Industrial Complex As Republicans tightened work requirements and eligibility rules for Medicaid and SNAP last year, Equifaxโ€™s CEO openly celebrated the profits to be made from administering this deprivation.

Absolutely terrific post by @lukefarrell.bsky.social . Itโ€™s shocking, wasteful, and pernicious how much our government relies on private contractors to perform the state function of administering public services. Great proposals here.

Yes, the GOP controls Congress. That's why it's key to show Congress COULD stop the madness. And it's not just the DHS bill. Congress could repeal the prior multi-year $75b for DHS; set up a special investigative committee (cf. Watergate); amend the Insurrection Act; etc.

NYT push alert: "A person was shot dead today during a struggle with federal agents in Minneapolis, according to officials."

By who? Who shot the person dead? You saw the video. We all know a federal agent shot a man dead who was prone on the ground. Also, it's not "according to officials." It's according to verified video seen with your eyes. Not saying what anyone can obviously see with their eyes is a form of lying.

I'll say yet again: Trump & his party do something virtually every day that constitutes a more violent & alarming suppression of speech than anything that happened during the entire alleged tyranny of woke. Every day. Yet the entire Free Spech army has just vanished into mist.

๐ŸšจHOLY CRAP. An ICE whistleblower just revealed a secret memo authorizing ICE officers to break into homes without a judicial warrant, which DHS's own legal training materials say is unconstitutional!

ICE then hid the memo from the public, passing it along by word of mouth and private conversation.

This is, in my opinion, not only the correct moral/ethical/legal position but also the correct political framing. Everyone can see the agency is out of control; everyone can see that it is constantly violating human rights. "Scrap it and start over" is the moderate position.

Screenshot of a data visualization titled โ€œThe Cost of American Exceptionalism,โ€ subtitled โ€œWhat would change if the U.S. matched the OECD average?โ€ The page explains that each card shows how outcomes would change if the U.S. matched the average of 31 peer democracies. Below, a section labeled โ€œEconomy & Inequalityโ€ displays eight cards comparing U.S. figures to OECD averages. Highlights include: +$19K per household per year in redistributed income and +$96K in redistributed wealth if the top 1% matched OECD shares; a 71% lower CEO-to-worker pay ratio (from 354ร— to 101ร—); 50 million more workers with union coverage; 26 million more people with health insurance; $2.1 trillion saved annually in healthcare spending; $691 less per person per year in prescription drug costs; and intergenerational economic mobility being twice as high. Each card shows the U.S. value alongside the OECD average.

If there's one empirical insight I'd want everyone to understand about American politics, it's this:

America's problems are solved problems. Just not here.

What would change if the US simply matched the average of 31 peer democracies? Not Denmark or Norway. Just the middle of the pack. ๐Ÿงต

Walz: "What's happening in MN defies belief. News reports simply don't do justice to the level of chaos & disruption & trauma the federal govt is raining down... This long ago stopped being a matter of immigration enforcement. Instead, it's a campaign of organized brutality against the people of MN"

Letโ€™s talk about abolishing ICE.

Very few people who say โ€œabolish ICEโ€ mean โ€œabandon all immigration enforcement.โ€ Rather, they mean โ€œthe structure of immigration enforcement is irretrievably broken and needs to be reorganized, just like we did 23 years ago when we created ICE.โ€

What does that say about the Democratic establishment?
