It’s not Rocket Science – Tracking performance of OneWeb terminals | Nick vs Networking

Interesting post by @nickvsnetworking.bsky.social on how two faulty OneWeb satellites are making it hard to deliver mobile service on remote island locations. Eutelsat wasn't helpful, but an open API and some hacking showed the issue nickvsnetworking.com/its-not-rock...

New Dataset Reveals Impact of RDOF Defaults on Each State FCC data reveals how many locations will not be connected and how much investment each state will lose as a result of RDOF defaults

RDOF was an experiment in putting most of the capability evaluation after the auction. www.benton.org/blog/new-dat... shows that this caused significant delay in broadband deployment. But 95% of the defaulted locations were pre-authorization ("long-form"), so they will be covered by BEAD.

Job ad: "Protestant women wanted" "A Protestant with family" "A man with family will be preferred"

Job ads from Feltville, NJ, from the 1860s. Definitely no DEI, but saying the quiet parts out loud.

The same Trump voters deeply concerned that Obama was born in Africa seem to have no problem with a president-not-elect actually born there.

One of the "old media" advantages: You could go into your local library and likely find most mainstream magazines, from The Atlantic to National Review. Nexis gives access to newspapers. With Substack and Medium, it's death by subscription (or, likely, "not interesting enough").

EV in Germany, cont'd: Learned the hard way that chargers at the grocery store Lidl are only available during business hours. Most grocery stores are closed on Sundays. No food for humans, no electrons for cars. (They do seem to offer free charging, so this makes some sense.)

Europcar EV experience in Germany: Was upgraded from a VW ID.3 to a Mercedes EQA250+ - nice. Came with only 41% charge - not so nice. Quiet and great acceleration. Some chargers require their own app and setup (painful), others take credit cards.
