If I need to retain (like for work) I force myself to slow, e.g. pause between paragraphs. I read a lot of fiction as well, for pleasure. It’s when a book challenges me enough to really really slow down (e.g. Terra Ignota, M. Ashby). The blessing to not retaining is that I really enjoy rereads!
