200 riders at the Alex Pretti memorial in Anchorage Alaska! Nice to see old friends and meet new. This administration has turned ICE into a tool of domestic terror, unleashing violence on immigrants and citizens alike. It must be stopped.

Life in Alaska... dip netting for red salmon in the Kenai River. In contrast to rod-and-reel fishing, which we call "combat fishing" here, the vibe is totally chill. It's a little community on the shore, with people cheering each other on and helping as needed.

Kind of a softball headline for an article that says there’s an 80% chance that temperatures will exceed the record. I guess we aren’t supposed to be alarmed.

It’s a cool idea that their whistle could encode the same kind of information as a human’s face.

Incredible book! The sequel was good too. And then she changed genres, which was a real loss for science fiction.

I read it fairly recently… a year or two ago. I’m not much of a gamer, but I also enjoyed a computer game of the same name, whose visuals really appealed and was self-paced so I could be inept without consequence

If you need a break from watching the US government self-destruct, I highly recommend Flow (2024). It's a gorgeous, quiet, reflective film well worth your time.

I wish Bandai would do the ANH Falcon in 1/144. My favorite as well, likely because my high school brain was imprinted with it hard.

Copilot in MS Word started prompting me yesterday to rewrite paragraphs in the short story I was working on. Which is new behavior, thanks! And not welcome. And then the Google AI summary on how to turn it off was wrong. So that was kind of funny.

Startups Begin Geoengineering the Sea These companies are trying to make the oceans a better carbon sink

This is not the way. (Because creating a giant fleet of machines to clean up after an even bigger fleet of machines is a losing proposition in a biosphere. Just doesn't scale. Sequestration needs to be biological. (And also, stop pooping carbon.))

Working my way through the latest issue of Analog and was impressed with "Fixative" by Jonathan Olfert. Kind of story that needs to be read twice to pick up all details and see how it locks together. Perfect blend of compassion for the human condition and hard science fiction. And nailed the ending.

Though any given one would not be here for long, unless "they" could figure out how to decelerate them. Maybe have most of the swarm form a large mirror, and bounce the beam back on a few others.
