The irony is that you fill in a survey for an archive and then you just know you'll get another 2 of these in about 1.5 weeks' time. How many glowing reviews can I write until I'm left with "they are fine, please stop asking me to fill this"? πŸ˜…

Ooh, I had no idea! Thank you! I walked right past this last May wondering if there was another entrance, but totally missed this. πŸ˜†

Definitely something to check out next time I'm in York!

For day 15 of #31DaysOfGraves the theme is #Damaged. This picture was taken outside St Paul’s Concert Hall in #Huddersfield. It was formerly St Paul’s Church, where my great-grandparents, Thomas Henry Dyson and Elizabeth Townend, were married in 1889.

I have not figured out how to go into the churchyard when the church is closed (if it's even possible?), but I'd like to eventually have a look at some graves. πŸ™‚

✨ If doors could speak, this one tells a tale of monks, kings and queens and scholars. Built into the abbot's house of St. Mary's Abbey. It saw Henry VIII and Catherine Howard, became a portal for the King's Council, then a place of learning.

The door is full of latent memory.

The grave of William Etty, 1787-1849, one of York's most prominent characters in the churchyard at St. Olave's Church, York.
Special thanks to @graveyardsquirrel.com for bringing this to my attention.

I didn't realise that Etty was buried there, so thanks for sharing this! The little I know about him is that he was friends with John Harper (the architect) and that he painted his portrait.

It looks like Etty was a very talented artist!

I feel that, if you give me a very nerdy item that I can use to create things, you should absolutely be ready to receive one of those creations alongside what is possibly the nerdiest bit of origami you'll ever see.

I don't make the rules. πŸ˜†

Shadows on the Park Wall, Roundhay, Leeds John Atkinson Grimshaw (1836–1893) Leeds Art Gallery Leeds Museums and Galleries

John Atkinson Grimshaw was a master of moonlit streets and mist-draped docks, a painter who captured the very texture of the Victorian dream. His cityscapes, illuminated by the soft glow of gaslight, startled viewers with their precision and poetry, scenes where realism met reverie. Though

On the bright side: at least all Halloween cards are now written and only need to be dropped off at the post office next week.

Then I can get a head start on the Xmas cards and festive seals.

Told myself I'd not go anywhere this weekend, but it turns out I have to go out on Sunday to vote.

Not that I'm thrilled to put on anything other than pyjamas all weekend, but then I'd rather not let the fascists win.

Iconic is a word that is definitely overused but in the case of the Piece Hall in Halifax that is not the case. Built in 1775-9, it is a rare surviving example of a large-scale, purpose-built cloth hall. Historic England has praised its architectural and historical interest

Day 8: Glass
Another one from Southampton Old Cemetery - the grave of Ethel Maude Newman (1875-1940), Lady Visitor for the Titanic Relief Fund. I'm not sure I like the garish blue glass chips but the story of her work with victims' families is a fascinating bit of social history.
