If Australia wants to avoid American-style radicalisation and political violence, and save our tradition of political moderation, we'll need to reign in Big Tech.

Here I argue that the traditional left-right divide has been usurped by the politics of the chronically online vs. those of us who continue to primarily exist in, and interpret politics though, the offline world.

Left or right, the real source of extremism is right in front of our faces America’s epidemic of radicalisation and political violence should be a wake-up call for Australia to address the disastrous impact of the growing online-offline divide.

When I was jailed in Iran, the interrogator showed me a list of Australian sites and began asking questions Typed on the piece of paper were the addresses of synagogues and Jewish organisations in Melbourne. He wanted to know if I’d visited any of them, and if so, what was inside.

1/ For the first time since my academic career was effectively destroyed by my wrongful arrest in Iran in 2018, I have published a peer-reviewed journal article. Still not sure whether academia is where I'm meant to be, but I'm pleased to have finally got a tentative first step back on the ladder.

My op-ed for @crikey.com.au There is great danger that now the bombs will stop falling, the regime will turn its attention to recriminations and rounding up innocent civilians to charge with bogus security crimes in order to demonstrate that its domestic coercive power has not weakened.

What happens to Iran when the bombs stop falling? Civilians inside Iran express grave fears that its government will severely punish them when no longer preoccupied by external enemies.

"As always, the Iranian people will likely pay the greatest price for this war. It remains to be seen whether their self-appointed champions in Tel Aviv and Washington will still be there when it matters,"

Iranians support Israel assassinating their oppressors – at least for now Regime change, if that is indeed Israel’s goal, cannot be imposed from outside. It must come from within, and Israel risks alienating the very constituency it needs to get the job done.

4. Jenkins has no worth to Putin rotting away in a max security prison. I would expect Russia to leverage him for some kind of concession in the future.

3. The Russians take a transactional approach in these deals, and are prepared to negotiate with far more significant adversaries than Australia (and let's be honest, they don't give a damn about Australia) in order to get what they want.

2. It neglects to mention that Australia has recently arrested 2 Russian spies who could presumably be offered in exchange for Jenkins. The Kremlin has in the past shown its appetite for conducting such swaps when spies, assassins and others sent abroad to do its dirty work have been apprehended.

Sadly, Russia’s mercenary verdict means Oscar Jenkins won't be coming home anytime soon The Australian fighter's 13-year sentence in occupied Ukraine eliminates prisoner exchange hopes and leaves Canberra few options under law.
