If Australia wants to avoid American-style radicalisation and political violence, and save our tradition of political moderation, we'll need to reign in Big Tech.
24.09.2025 23:24 β π 13 π 2 π¬ 3 π 0Here I argue that the traditional left-right divide has been usurped by the politics of the chronically online vs. those of us who continue to primarily exist in, and interpret politics though, the offline world.

Appeared on this morning's edition of the @7ampodcast
to discuss why the IRGC is interested in Australia, how it operates here and what listing it as a terror organisation might actually achieve 7ampodcast.com.au/episodes/kyl...
I had a lot of fun preparing for and recording this podcast. Guests have to choose one film, book, song, object and place to spark discussion. Have a listen! podcasts.apple.com/au/podcast/1...

1/ For the first time since my academic career was effectively destroyed by my wrongful arrest in Iran in 2018, I have published a peer-reviewed journal article. Still not sure whether academia is where I'm meant to be, but I'm pleased to have finally got a tentative first step back on the ladder.

My interview a couple of days ago with ABC's The Business on the implications of the Iranian strike on Qatar for relations with the Gulf, and the crackdown that is now underway of the Iranian regime against its own people.

My piece for The Age / SMH on the targeting of Evin prison, the fate of the prisoners inside and why Evin as a symbol cannot be erased by bombs alone.
www.theage.com.au/world/middle...
My op-ed for @crikey.com.au There is great danger that now the bombs will stop falling, the regime will turn its attention to recriminations and rounding up innocent civilians to charge with bogus security crimes in order to demonstrate that its domestic coercive power has not weakened.
25.06.2025 02:05 β π 7 π 1 π¬ 0 π 0"As always, the Iranian people will likely pay the greatest price for this war. It remains to be seen whether their self-appointed champions in Tel Aviv and Washington will still be there when it matters,"

10.06.2025 00:12 β π 3 π 1 π¬ 1 π 0Robert's ordeal is by no means over, but this is a welcome first step.
06.06.2025 03:30 β π 0 π 0 π¬ 0 π 0So pleased to hear that Australian engineer Robert Pether has been released from prison in Iraq. Robert is currently on bail, can't leave the country and faces the prospect of going back to court for further proceedings, which could carry more jail time.
06.06.2025 03:29 β π 0 π 0 π¬ 1 π 0"Iraqi and Lebanese officials told AP the talks recently stalled over Iranβs demand for the release of one of its citizens detained in Iraq for the killing of an American." apnews.com/article/isra...
03.06.2025 05:50 β π 0 π 0 π¬ 0 π 04. Jenkins has no worth to Putin rotting away in a max security prison. I would expect Russia to leverage him for some kind of concession in the future.
29.05.2025 23:55 β π 1 π 0 π¬ 0 π 03. The Russians take a transactional approach in these deals, and are prepared to negotiate with far more significant adversaries than Australia (and let's be honest, they don't give a damn about Australia) in order to get what they want.
29.05.2025 23:55 β π 0 π 0 π¬ 1 π 02. It neglects to mention that Australia has recently arrested 2 Russian spies who could presumably be offered in exchange for Jenkins. The Kremlin has in the past shown its appetite for conducting such swaps when spies, assassins and others sent abroad to do its dirty work have been apprehended.
29.05.2025 23:55 β π 0 π 0 π¬ 1 π 01. While this @LowyInstitute piece makes a number of good points, I disagree with its overall pessimism about the prospects for a prisoner swap with Russia.
