A fascinating ROLSI blog post by @philhutchinson.bsky.social on the long running ethnomethodology/CA reading group, originally based at Manchester University.

A great write up on the life and liveliness of the β€œManchester” EM Reading Group. As Phil says, it’s rare to find space to really talk and think in modern academia.

I don’t get to go as often as I’d like, but like any favourite place that one has, knowing it’s there makes things a little better.

This is a great thread, which encouraged me to go back to Conversation and Cognition this morning. I then proposed that we work through it, chapter by chapter, in the reading group I facilitate, & add Potter's follow-up paper from 2006, in which he responds to Drew.
So thanks!

The introduction to our special issue on the (re)production of asymmetries-in-action. It’s been a pleasure working with @cathtam.bsky.social and our contributors in demonstrating EM/CA approaches to various β€œisms” and some of sociology’s β€œBig” concerns.

Not to defend 'the Manchester programme' & certainly not Button's book, but I don't think your criticism sticks. Anderson & Sharrock have argued that EM is 3rd Person Phenomenology. AFAIK, none of that old Manc crowd have ever argued that EM is a method, Rod Watson explicitly argued against the idea

Yes, that doesn't ring any bells for me, in that it's not a passage I'm immediately familiar with. Though the topic of the passage does sound like Koffka on behavioral environments (to be contrasted with geographic environments). So I'd be inclined to think it is Koffka and not Kohler.

Dave Ball was not some bloke in the background of Soft Cell – he drove their startling, subversive sound Far more than a mute foil to Marc Almond, Ball brought his love of northern soul and strange electronics to bear on some of Britain’s most uncompromising pop

RIP Dave Ball. I genuinely think that early eighties synth pop was one of those times when the avant garde broke through to the mainstream, opening things up musically and culturally.
Checkout the BBC's Synth Britannia doc, from 2009, if you've never seen it.

Because it's not about warning in the sense of encouraging people not to watch/read potentially distressing material it's about not being held responsible for someone's distress. If you've warned someone & they choose to watch/read then you're not liable for their distress.

The Elephant Man.
I watched it again last year with my son Chinua (15 at the time). We sat there for ten minutes after in silence, before he hugged me (I had something in my eye) & then had a couple of hours of life affirming conversation. We still find ourselves taking about it now.

I didn't see that. I actually thought that if anything SA got a rough deal from the ref in the second half. Though I wouldn't make a big deal of it. Great game but about the right result. Can't wait for the next one.
