the funniest thing that happened during the pandemic were all the rich people who flounced out of california for texas, got to texas, discovered it sucked, moved back, and then wrote blog posts about their "learnings"

General austerity, not regulating the payday loan markets, and other political decisions may have quite an impact in domestic consumption. It would be interesting to see statistics/research on this

Perhaps there is an obvious case about groceries, at least where I live.

K-market is a regular corporation while PKO is a co-operative and the prices are indeed lower in the latter (tho some say it is too big and can use the leverage with producers)

Another airport expansion planned, another occasion to repeat:

As long as there are no credible plans for climate neutrality of aviation, investing in airport expansion is betting on us all giving up on the Paris agreement.

(Almost all the bike lanes are dedicated and there are fewer cars in the city so the traffic tends to flow nicely)

My photo shows a small Proto-Corinthian clay aryballos (perfumed-oil container) in the shape of an owl with a pouring hole in the tail. Height 5 cm, Width 6.4 cm. The owl is perched with its tail to the left and head to the right. It leans slightly forwards with head turned so that its large eyes face the viewer. The owl’s chest is painted black. The eyes and plummage are intricately detailed in black on a yellowy-cream slip. Three rows of feathers in the wing plumage are painted alternately in red and black. Dated c. 640 BC

Rescued British hiker billed €14,225 for ignoring rockslide signs in Dolomites Local rescue service chief says two helicopters had to be used after man, 60, ventured on to path closed due to risk

“Helicopters are essential for time-dependent [rescue] operations in harsh environments (…) it is important that they are not used as taxis, endangering not only those who are providing the assistance but those who actually need it.”

Pitäisikö poliitikkojen opetella sääntelemään markkinoita?

The experience is familiar, yet so remote. This is how I grew up in the capital city. There's so much socialization in consumption.

The general North Karelian vibes are so different than that, not as a reaction to it or 'better' in a moral way, just very different.

Heh, I indulged in minor consumerism today due to the meager tax returns and bought not just a hat, but also shorts and a random shirt. Went to the barbers and ate a veggie burger.

I've forgotten that this is what most people do every week of the year, every year, until they lose credit or die.

It is an issue for the rescue and border authorities when they get these hiker cases, while this time is usually also busy with other rescue tasks, and now there have been issues on the Russian border.

I get that watching Bear Grylls in the early 2000s TV could have invoked the sentiment for some, but nowadays, thousands of YouTube influencers do really hard stuff and make it look easy, to get attention and commercial endorsements. And the tourism industry is booming.

I learned after the third year of steadily increasing outdoor difficulty in North Karelia, that I don't have to do stunts or have major targets for trips.

Many folks have short vacations and high expectations, and limited skills/experience so they push it - during unprecedented extreme weather.

the USA built a system of higher education so good that smart/rich people from across the world came here, spending billions to learn here, subsidizing education for Americans while spending money to live in our cities and towns. our government arbitrarily decided we should stop doing that

Journey times up, deaths down: Welsh 20mph speed limit still divisive two years on Protests continue against default lower limit in urban areas that supporters say is working ‘exactly as intended’

On the one hand, far fewer people are being killed. On the other, some people get to work two minutes later. So it's impossible to say whether it's good or not.

It’s funny how I overheard many people judging the SUV in the left corner for driving on the pedestrian and dedicated cycling lane.

In many cities, the e-biker driving on a car street would probably get a similar treatment from angry motorists. But not here!

🔥Wildfires are growing more frequent and intense, fuelled by climate change and extreme weather. How do we measure their true impact? With near real-time data, CAMS tracks wildfire emissions, while C3S provides a range of fire-related datasets.

Näinhän se onnistuisi itärajalla: nostetaan soiden vedenpinta takaisin normaalille tasolle, siirrytään jatkuvapeitteiseen metsätalouteen suomailla, suojellaan jos on jotain vanhempaa jäljellä vielä, osallistetaan paikalliset kunnostuksiin ja töitä kaiken lisäksi koneyrittäjille.

I advise against going hiking in Finland or other Nordic countries in July. This has become the norm for us by mid-summer. Hike in May (not possible in the furthest north), June or September.

Case Finland: we had a fairly clean grid electricity system already and added some new wind power. Heat pumps and a few BEVs are sold now and then.

Coal and peat were mostly retired, gas was never used at scale - but transport emissions are flat/increasing and land use has become a source of GHGs.
