💡 Remember:
Labels reduce overload.
Clear labels = clearer thinking = more marks.
📌 Save this for exams

✏️ Example
The question gives:
A diagram
Lots of numbers
A long sentence
✔️ Write the numbers on the diagram
✔️ Label unknowns (like x)
✔️ Ignore extra words once it’s labelled
What to do:
1️⃣ Write numbers next to the diagram
2️⃣ Label lengths, angles, or parts (e.g. 8 cm, x, A₁)
3️⃣ Underline or circle key info in the text
4️⃣ Cross out info you’ve already used
Branded Limitless Learners maths poster titled “Maths Tip: Label Your Diagram (Nat 5 & Higher)”. It explains that if a question looks messy or confusing, you should label the diagram and not keep everything in your head. Steps include writing numbers next to the diagram, labelling lengths and angles, underlining or circling key information, and crossing out information already used. An example shows a right-angled triangle before and after labelling, with side lengths clearly marked to make the problem easier to understand. The poster ends with reminders that labels reduce overload and help with clearer thinking and more marks. Limitless Learners logo and website are shown.
If a question looks messy or confusing:
👉 Label it.
👉 Don’t keep it all in your head.
Your brain works better when the information is outside your head.

At the top are award logos, including The Scottish Asian & Business Awards 2023 Winner and SAMEE Supporting Inclusive Learning Award. A circular headshot shows a smiling, bald man with a grey beard wearing a light-coloured shirt. Below, a speech-bubble design reads “Feedback from parents & students” followed by a testimonial: “Alan has been a great support to my son over last few months with Higher Physics. He is adaptable, very approachable and easy to work with. Highly recommend!” The review is attributed to K-Kirsty McCarroll with a five-star rating. Limitless Learners logo and the tagline “Nothing can stop you” appear at the top.
We were delighted to here back from parents about Alan's work with theirs young person.
Alan is very analytical and takes time to build a relationship to understand each of his students. He loves his subject and gives clear guidance on understanding course content.
📏 Units: Make sure you know the standard units for all quantities, for example Nm for moment.

💡 Step 5 also gives your brain a moment to reflect and helps you reset before moving on to the next problem.
📘 Data booklet: Get familiar with this document – it is a very useful tool. Use it!
4️⃣ Replace algebraic symbols with the data (substitution). Do this either before or after rearranging the equation.
5️⃣ Calculate your answer, check the unit (if any) is correct, and make sure you have actually answered the question being asked.
3️⃣ Write down any relationships (equations) that the data suggest might be useful. These can help you calculate another quantity (this might be the final answer, or a step towards it in more complex problems).
27.01.2026 14:14 — 👍 0 🔁 0 💬 1 📌 0🧩 Use a problem-solving algorithm
This could be a five-step process to help guide you through the question:
1️⃣ Read the question carefully.
2️⃣ Extract the data from the question and write a clear data list.
🧠 Knowledge, understanding & problem solving
📚 Do your homework (literally & figuratively) so that you know what questions will be asking about, understand any ideas relevant to the scenario the question describes, and use a standard method.
Graphic titled “Advice for Engineering Exams” with Limitless Learners branding and award logos at the top. The poster lists tips: “Read all questions before you start,” “Understand what’s being asked,” “Use a problem-solving process,” “Check units and prefixes,” and “Use your data booklet properly.” Text says “Read full post for details.” The bottom shows a circular headshot of a smiling man labelled “Alan Morrison.” Engineering-themed illustrations (blueprints, tools, calculator, ruler, compass, helmet) appear on the right, on a blue-green gradient background.
If exam questions make your mind go blank, this is for you. 🧠💭
Alan at Limitless Learners shares simple steps to help you slow down, breathe, and take things one question at a time 🤍
Here is how to start:
🔍 Have a brief look at all the questions before putting pen to paper.
This means they use prior knowledge of SOH CAH TOH to deduce the values logically. You know the values are correct through Pythagoras.
Having logical steps to follow helps more than relying on an unreliable memory under stress.
#trigonometry #neurodivergentlearning #examtips
This is why, instead of asking learners to rote-learn exact values, I practice drawing out and familiarising them with the identity triangles.
23.01.2026 13:29 — 👍 0 🔁 0 💬 1 📌 0Branded Limitless Learners graphic on a dark blue background. At the top are award logos (Scottish Asian & Business Awards 2023 Winner and SAMEE Supporting Inclusive Learning Award) and the Limitless Learners logo with the slogan “Nothing Can Stop You.” In the centre is a maths diagram titled “Evaluating Functions of a 30°, 45°, or 60° Angle,” showing two right-angled triangles: a 30°–60°–90° triangle labelled with side lengths 1, √3, and 2, and a 45°–45°–90° triangle labelled with side lengths 1, 1, and √2. Below are the trigonometric values for sine, cosine, and tangent of 30°, 45°, and 60°. At the bottom, the text reads “Tips from Sofia” and “limitlesslearners.co.uk.”
Often, learners struggle with poor working or short-term memory. It is nearly impossible to commit facts to memory, and to be expected to recall them during exam conditions adds pressure and stress.
