Al Williamson Wherein I write about one of the greatest illustrators to ever grace both comic books and comic strips

The latest edition of my free comics newsletter is about Al Williamson. Williamson was ridiculously good at drawing and became one of the greatest inkers ever. He was superlative illustrator of comic books and newspaper strips.

In this Sunday comic strip, Walt is taking Skeezix for a walk at night and gets suspicious when he sees a bunch of kids in Avery’s yard and realizes they are working on his car. He considers alerting Avery but decides to handle it himself and goes to confront the kids. The next morning, Avery wakes up to see that his car is on the roof and complains to Walt. Walt feigns ignorance and waves one of the kids away.

Gasoline Alley by Frank King from October 26, 1924. This is one of my favorites, but poor Avery.

Kurtzman and Elder were darn funny, but they also produced off-kilter noir. I rewatched Inherent Vice this week and I did wonder what their comics adaptation would've been like.

Gasoline Alley by Frank King from October 20, 1929. Featuring one of Skeezix and Walt’s annual Autumn walks. Gasoline Alley at its best.

At a police briefing, Det. Gordon stands in front of three police sketches of The Batman.

The first shows a hideous bat creature. The second shows a dark cloaked figure. The final shows a caped man in a cowl with pointed ears like a bat.

Gordon explains that the vigilante has performed multiple acts of assault over the past five weeks and that he possesses great physical skill.

A cop injured by The Batman interrupts Gordon.

"Not he. It."

It's been over a month since the vigilante, the so-called "Batman", first appeared.

Police don't know if he's a man or a monster.

Some sweet John Craig covers from Vault of Horror, done between 1950 and 1954. It's insane how good he was. One of the greatest cover artists ever, surely. EC's artist line-up is surely still the high watermark for comics.
