Interesting thread, quite well-argued. Of course, *comic* books are the exact opposite.

- Time spent in comic shops is never wasted (unless you are).
- Comic books make great gifts (you'll look hip).
- Comics on a living room shelf are always cool (especially ones with sexy spines).

That's what Alex Kurtzman said: he wanted it set in an era where the kids are inheriting a shitty universe, not a utopia.

Is there any reason why Carol Kane's character couldn't still be around in the #StarfleetAcademy era? I want to see her and Holly Hunter bouncing off each other.

You can see a clear schism developing with the War Fleet seeing Starfleet as a bunch of hippy scientists who need their constant protection. That won't end well.

Damn, isn't it nice to have a Star Trek show where the future is genuinely uncertain?

I can see a problem down the road if the Federation has a separate military force that *doesn't* promote those values.

Yeah, they haven't really defined the differences between Starfleet Academy and the War College yet.

Of course, we saw in the first episode that the school itself is armed to the teeth, so the message is a bit mixed.

Starfleet was always essentially the military arm of the Federation in the past, so it's interesting to see it being treated differently here.
