and don’t even get me started on archival… in a digital & globalized age where ebooks are just licenses where if the company/website/app goes down your library does too, i’m honestly a bit sad for the modern day manga library of alexandria

i know major JP publishers sometimes use the french market as the benchmark in success before bidding with the US imprints for EN releases, but even then the US might only get the option to pick up a third of what gets licensed in france at best.

the whole debacle around bato being taken down is so interesting to me, because if there’s an estimated number of “lost revenue”, even around titles that were never going to be licensed through official means, that means these publishers acknowledge the potential but don’t act on them
