one : if you have to play all the cards you draft then 30 card decks decreases mental load. No cuts is fast. And your deck is basically your hands side board, and less options, should be easier to pick from. And 30 card decks are more consistent, which is a big part of planing your opening 7.

Minor update : after pulling together 160 cards to go with the 100 lands, for the Preppers / 3CB desert cube experiment …I’m thinking 2 things :

There definitely a design choice in here, of how explosive the opening hands should be. Reanimate could be insane, but if countered, terrible.

We never got to play the micro formats ‘5 Alive’ or ‘Nearby Planet’, which both use the ‘draft your opening hand’ , but I assure you, once you do, it’s wildly addictive. I’m trying to weave it into a larger 8 player system. We’ll see if something works.

Thinking about cards, some the opening hand is going to be very sharp, things like Mental Misstep or Force of Will are interesting.

Speaking of lands, these could be low tier, enter tapped or otherwise, and still be great. Which is a fun way of playing with the texture or theme.

I’m thinking that folks main board 3 lands and maybe put 10 more in their decks.

Which means the total lands in the desert can be like only 100.

What cards go in a cube with these restrictions:
- no tokens / counters
- no shuffling / searching
- desert (draft your lands)
- no deck building (mainboard all cards you draft)
- and…here’s the kicker…you can pick your starting hand from your pool.
