Hello anaesthetics and neuroscience people! I was wondering if anyone could point me in the direction of work on the nature of anaesthetics and the neurobiology of consciousness. Mashour (2024), Bao (2023), and Hemmings & Adamo were useful springboards, but I wondered if anyone had other favourites

With no transition plan I might add! How will the re-skill?

Yeah, itโ€™s tough for me to parse where that comes from and exactly who itโ€™s for (other than him). Itโ€™s a very Salvini-esq line in a lot of ways.

Not at all like the woke lanyard pits of today.

Association Resident Doctors Committee statement on anaesthetic training competition ratios We are once again bitterly disappointed to read the latest publication of competition ratios for anaesthesia from NHS England. The data show that there were 6,770 applicants for just 539 โ€˜Anaesthetics...

Itโ€™s only when Iโ€™m doing statistical analysis on wealth/income, that I am reminded that the extreme ends of the income and wealth distribution represent a lot of people in absolute terms. Hundreds of thousands/millions of them in actual fact.

Iโ€™m 23, which means Iโ€™m friends with a lot of scared and angry FY2s AND a lot of scared and angry AHP grads who havenโ€™t secured Band 5 positions. Itโ€™s a team game in every sense. As my ex-rugby coach used to say before punishment sprints, โ€œwe win together and we lose togetherโ€.

This is a a very critical and clear-eyed piece of analysis about where things are headed (well, hopefully not) workforce planning-wise. Well worth your time.

Itโ€™s also really important to get the headlines right so colleagues can know whatโ€™s going on. From my own experience talking to nurses, physios, pharmacists etc., arenโ€™t aware of the bottle necks for both GPs and hospitalists. Understanding leads to solidarity and all that.

I suspect the BMAโ€™s demand for a new regulator will get louder again in the coming months.

For the record, your method and your data are effectively all that matter. Good writers, at least in the social sciences, are strong on narrative and content delivery too, but thatโ€™s underpinned by a hardcore belief in empiricism and methodological rigour!!!

โ€œNo one cares about your methodโ€ is one of the most insane things Iโ€™ve read in academia.

Electoral explanations for politico-economic phenomena were advanced greatly in recent years. Itโ€™s been a really fruitful area of the literature!

This is actually sort of @noamgidron.bsky.social and Peter Hallโ€™s point. Itโ€™s not material security that matters per se, it may be much more to do with votersโ€™ perception of their place in the social order.

These kinds of occupations tend to impart reactionary views AND they are some of the biggest losers of todayโ€™s political economy. Theyโ€™re the ones that tend to get very reactionary very quickly and vote as such.

Yep, but this literature says you can go further, essentially, the strong version of this literature is that we can divine downstream attitudes based on the class schema. I donโ€™t totally agree with this, but it mostly works in this case.

27.08.2025 10:45 โ€” ๐Ÿ‘ 0    ๐Ÿ” 0    ๐Ÿ’ฌ 0    ๐Ÿ“Œ 0

Have a look at Oeschโ€™s class schema. I realise that Iโ€™m using terminology specific to comp. pol.-econ. The petit-bourgeoisie in the electoral politics CPE lit are eg. small business owners, industrialists, policemen, prison guards. Think decent income, low education.
