Hello anaesthetics and neuroscience people! I was wondering if anyone could point me in the direction of work on the nature of anaesthetics and the neurobiology of consciousness. Mashour (2024), Bao (2023), and Hemmings & Adamo were useful springboards, but I wondered if anyone had other favourites

It’s only when I’m doing statistical analysis on wealth/income, that I am reminded that the extreme ends of the income and wealth distribution represent a lot of people in absolute terms. Hundreds of thousands/millions of them in actual fact.

I’m 23, which means I’m friends with a lot of scared and angry FY2s AND a lot of scared and angry AHP grads who haven’t secured Band 5 positions. It’s a team game in every sense. As my ex-rugby coach used to say before punishment sprints, “we win together and we lose together”.

It’s also really important to get the headlines right so colleagues can know what’s going on. From my own experience talking to nurses, physios, pharmacists etc., aren’t aware of the bottle necks for both GPs and hospitalists. Understanding leads to solidarity and all that.

I think you’re right. I had a long morning, and may have constructed a bit of a straw man in my frustration to have something to kick off about 😅.

For the record, your method and your data are effectively all that matter. Good writers, at least in the social sciences, are strong on narrative and content delivery too, but that’s underpinned by a hardcore belief in empiricism and methodological rigour!!!

A little research into the person behind this, and it all starts to make a bit more sense…

Electoral explanations for politico-economic phenomena were advanced greatly in recent years. It’s been a really fruitful area of the literature!

This is actually sort of @noamgidron.bsky.social and Peter Hall’s point. It’s not material security that matters per se, it may be much more to do with voters’ perception of their place in the social order.

These kinds of occupations tend to impart reactionary views AND they are some of the biggest losers of today’s political economy. They’re the ones that tend to get very reactionary very quickly and vote as such.

Yep, but this literature says you can go further, essentially, the strong version of this literature is that we can divine downstream attitudes based on the class schema. I don’t totally agree with this, but it mostly works in this case.

Have a look at Oesch’s class schema. I realise that I’m using terminology specific to comp. pol.-econ. The petit-bourgeoisie in the electoral politics CPE lit are eg. small business owners, industrialists, policemen, prison guards. Think decent income, low education.
