If there's one thing I wish I could communicate to the AI discourse on bluesky it's that while the longterm power needs of all NN software (especially in training) is large, the cost of a single query is quite small. and you can make it even smaller by using efficient models.

09.08.2025 01:55 β π 34173 π 4836 π¬ 1071 π 409[1] estimates the cost of training GPT-4 to be roughly 1/3 of GPT's total electricity cost, so maybe add +33% if you want to amortize that cost over all queries
no idea how much more (or less) compute a GPT-5 query is compared to GPT-4, since it just came out
GPT-4 queries take about 3 watt-hours [1]
3 Wh is 3.6g CO2 worst case (coal = 1200g/kWh, divide by 333) [2]
average car emits 104g CO2 per km [3]
3.6 / 104 * 1000 = ~35m

i would make an analogy along the lines of "eating a hotdog every so often isn't *ideal* but it's fine, but maybe don't eat hotdogs for 2 meals every day."
09.08.2025 00:47 β π 7 π 0 π¬ 0 π 0rule of thumb: one ChatGPT query has about the same environmental impact as driving a car 36 meters (120 feet).
sure, it's better for the environment if you don't, but a person using chatgpt once to dunk on it is not making a significant environmental impact compared to megacorps using it at scale.
