If there's one thing I wish I could communicate to the AI discourse on bluesky it's that while the longterm power needs of all NN software (especially in training) is large, the cost of a single query is quite small. and you can make it even smaller by using efficient models.

Honestly, without your reference image I'd have totally believed Sojiro as having a silver beard. The vibe totally works for him either way.

i love your costume so much -- it's so simple-seeming, but requires the right facial hair & hairstyle, but thankfully you appear to have that nailed

[1] estimates the cost of training GPT-4 to be roughly 1/3 of GPT's total electricity cost, so maybe add +33% if you want to amortize that cost over all queries

no idea how much more (or less) compute a GPT-5 query is compared to GPT-4, since it just came out

GPT-4 queries take about 3 watt-hours [1]
3 Wh is 3.6g CO2 worst case (coal = 1200g/kWh, divide by 333) [2]
average car emits 104g CO2 per km [3]
3.6 / 104 * 1000 = ~35m

i would make an analogy along the lines of "eating a hotdog every so often isn't *ideal* but it's fine, but maybe don't eat hotdogs for 2 meals every day."

rule of thumb: one ChatGPT query has about the same environmental impact as driving a car 36 meters (120 feet).

sure, it's better for the environment if you don't, but a person using chatgpt once to dunk on it is not making a significant environmental impact compared to megacorps using it at scale.

It's a high bar but "having bad political opinions prevents you from partying in college" has to be one of the most insane ideas I've ever heard from the reactionary centrist crowd.

personally I think Andrew Cuomo should give his apartment back to the person who really needed it: his adult daughter whom he turfed out of an $8000+/month midtown Manhattan apt bc he actually lives in Westchester but needed to claim residency for psychosexual reasons (running for mayor)

at the core of all the trans people in public spaces "debate" is this:

I don't care if you don't personally like seeing someone in public

shut up, keep it to yourself, and let them live their fucking lives
