Röhm’s sexuality, which until then had been ignored, was later used for shock-horror stories describing his “moral degeneracy”. Anyone thinking they can break the law with impunity because they’re ICE risks finding that coming back around if it becomes politically convenient for Trump or Miller. 2/2

Should also note that the Night of the Long Knives was the result of patient ladder climbing and influence-building by Himmler, who needed Röhm and his SA thugs out of the way for his SS and Gestapo to take over fully. This was sold to the population as “restoring order”. ICE should watch out. 1/2

YouTube video by Neil Miles BBC1 | Good Morning.... with Anne and Nick | 1994

Watched the first minutes of this Good Morning (uploaded by @miles-online.co.uk) and it's pure Partridge throughout, though "This man inflicted 23 fractures on his baby but walked free from court. We'll be meeting him just after 11." is too outlandish even for Alan.

Yes. And what came after was much worse.

ICE isn’t the Gestapo. The Gestapo was an efficient, ordered force. #ICE is the SA, the brownshirts, generally poorly educated and unemployed men who revelled in cruelty and destruction, smashing lives and businesses with impunity. Once they had served their function, the Führer had them liquidated.

Isn’t it every child’s dream from their first kick-about in the park that one day they’ll don the iconic blazer of their country’s football federation and walk out to cheering crowds at the FIFA Congress?

Also a huge Beach Boys fan, and all I can say about Kokomo is that when Brian Wilson (who was under Landy’s thumb at the time and didn’t attend the sessions) first heard it on the radio he didn’t recognise it as being a Beach Boys song.

The better-ten-guilty-people-go-free principle, as most famously espoused by that super-woke liberal crybaby Sir William Blackstone (1723-1730)?

I do like the suggestion that there was a secretive undercover wing of the Milk Marketing Board dedicated to inserting unsigned pro-milk black propaganda into the nation’s magazines.

I’m very fond of the somewhat arcane language used in Austrian officialese. The offence which elsewhere would be “assaulting a police officer” or “resisting arrest” is known here as “Widerstand gegen die Staatsgewalt” - literally, “Resistance against the forces of the State”.

Someone needs to explain to me why when the not-even-the-actual-POTUS US vice-president wants to go on holiday it requires an entire Oxfordshire village to be sealed off, while the actual King or the Prime Minister visiting requires nothing of the sort. Is he scared he might see a protester?

One of these is from the question bank for the Austrian integration test. The other is not. Guess which is which:

* Can a father forbid his daughter from taking part in school swimming lessons?
* Is it legal to display a tattoo of the SS insignia in public?

Took the B1 German test earlier as it’s a prerequisite for permanent residency and citizenship in Austria and I was pretty much the only white person in the room other than
the invigilators. Remind me again how immigrants never want to integrate into Austrian society?

The Youtube algorithm just suggested a documentary called “The Coke Inside”, which is a ready-made perfect headline in the event of Kate Bush being charged with smuggling narcotics.

I’m sure there were a number of polite yet serious gentlemen in suits around the place both in advance of and during the royal visit, but the whole thing was about as far from being in your face as it could be.

Given that they never let Hitler into the country even before the war, that sounds good to me.

The Queen once visited my workplace and I'd arrived too late to be allowed into the building. I was informed of this by a polite copper stationed at the entrance. No roadblocks, no screaming sirens.. I repaired to the Starbucks on the corner for the duration and waved at the Queen as she drove past.

In today's incompetent crime news, a man phoned in a bomb threat against a supermarket to the Vienna police but helpfully gave his name at the beginning of the conversation. wien.orf.at/stories/3317...

"After a short/long illness" is a standard formula for death announcements, though. I would imagine they'd agreed the form of words in advance with his family as well.

About to take my B1 German test. They said to bring a blue biro - should I use the ÖVP pen or the SPÖ pen? (they were both election handouts) #Austria #Wien

Also illegal in Austria and it’s taken seriously by the police. Took the younger kid to the playground a couple of years ago and saw someone grabbing their kid by the arm and hitting them for some imagined offence. It was such a shock that it took a few seconds to even register what had happened.

Illegal here since 1989. Can report that society has not collapsed and kids here are basically like kids anywhere else.
Assault is assault whoever it’s targeted at. And a system in which you can be convicted for punching an adult in the face but it’s fine to smack your kids in the face is fucked up.
