This study adds a new dimension to our understanding of how aging alters oligodendrocytes and myelin plasticity, and their link to cognitive resilience. A fascinating read!

Why does Plp1 matter? Myelination is crucial for brain function, and its dysregulation is linked to cognitive decline. With age, Plp1 expression rises in the female hippocampus. The authors show that boosting Plp1 in older mice (both male & female) led to improved memory performance.

Women tend to age better cognitively than men, but why? This cool new study finds aging reactivates genes on the inactive X chromosome in the female hippocampus. This shift could contribute to cognitive resilience, with the myelin gene Plp1 playing a major role.
