Rereading part of Brandon’s (1990) classic book for my course on Philosophy of Natural Selection. This is a must read text for all those interested in #PhilosophyofEvolution

Patrick Suppes was born OTD in 1922.

One of the great 20th century philosophers of science, Pat was an early critic of the semantic conception of theories, believing that theories are best conceived as sets of models.

He was also accomplished in both empirical science and business.

We strongly recommend listening to this insightful discussion on history and science between two highly distinguished scholars, including esteemed Australian historian of science Peter Harrison.

A substantial revision to “Scientific Progress” was published today by Ilkka Niiniluoto. Very interesting review.

Photo of James.

Photo of James.

William James was born OTD in 1842.

As important as “pragmatism” to understanding James is “meliorism,” the idea that improving the world is possible, but not assured. We have to fight for it.

“We receive in short the block of marble, but we carve the statue ourselves.”

Yes!! I passed the qualifying exam for PhD in Philosophy. Nothing special really. Except that I’m 62 years old. I’m a scientist with a PhD in Biology. #philsky #philsci

Yesterday was the anniversary of the mathematician, philosopher, and engineer Charles Babbage (b. 1791). He was involved in the creation of the first computer. Time to recommend the superb book of Odon Swade on the quest for the first computer.

Just sent off another "NO" to a conference: to the Vienna Institute for the Retardation of all Knowledge. This Vienna Crowd—a mass of nasty and unhappy creeps, I just couldn't stand it. But why do I say no to all conferences? Because I want to lead a peaceful life, because I want to stumble along at my own speed, produce my nonsense at my own speed, watched only by a few friends and knowing the reactions of these friends only (Anita, Karen, Susan—broads first—and you and your mafia). I am a contentious fellow, and if I am at a conference I get worried about "my position in contemporary thought," like Sir K whom I understand very well. I don't want to be worried in this way, it is time-consuming, and demeaning. And it is absolutely idiotic. But I have this weakness—so I'd rather stay away. Having a battle with you and Elie or Worrall is an entirely different thing, it is a most enter-taining and interesting way of expressing our friendship and I would not want to be without it. Your pap

Paul Feyerabend, not a fan of conferences. From a 1974 letter written to Imre Lakatos (in "For and Against Method") 🧪
