🚨Border Patrol arrested two firefighters who were actively fighting a wildfire at the time.

When the other members of the crew asked for a chance to say goodbye, a Border Patrol agent told the crew member β€œyou need to get the f*ck out of here. I’m going to make you leave.”

Super excited to kick-off our new series on strategies for states to lead on a pro-nature energy buildout! This starter piece is a broad overview/rebuttal of the clean energy vs. conservation argument, but we have future policy deep dives in the work so keep an eye out!

States Can Lead the Way on an Abundant, Pro-Nature Clean Energy Future The Trump administration has falsely framed wind and solar power as harmful to wildlife in order to justify stifling affordable, rapid-to-deploy, clean energy. Here’s how state leadership can advance ...

The Trump admin and congress are squeezing wind power from both sides: with the wind permitting pause still in place and DOI adding layers of high-level review, many projects will not be able to start construction to meet new deadlines for tax credits they may have been counting on πŸ”ŒπŸ’‘

The Trump Administration and Congress’ Attacks on Wind Power Are Killing Thousands of Jobs and Risk Thousands More The Trump administration and congressional Republicans are attacking the entire wind power industry and throwing into question more than 17,000 offshore jobs and likely thousands more onshore.

Onshore and offshore wind projects are slated to create tens of thousands of jobs - if they survive Trump and Congressional Republicans' policies. New analysis from me and @americanprogress.bsky.social colleagues here: www.americanprogress.org/article/the-... πŸ”ŒπŸ’‘

Is this abundance?

This project was approved under FAST-41, meaning it had expedited permit approvals. It also had labor, domestic supply chain, power offtake agreements for communities attached to it... meaning a whole lot of high quality American jobs and affordable energy just went up in flames.

Our research dives into the IRA Energy Community adder that supports projects in brownfields and communities impacted by the fossil fuel transition. It finds that 1500+ projects were eligible for the adder - many of the projects yet to start construction now may be at risk with the early termination

We hope that these examples can be a blueprint for a more effective approach that centers the importance of nearshore habitats and smart state/local policy. Under an administration that is rolling back environmental protections and funding, state leadership will be even more crucial. (5/6)

Luckily, there are a TON of great examples of effective, community-led ocean conservation being championed by state and local orgs, that we sourced from a big survey of the ocean conservation community and highlight in this report. (4/6)

Despite their relatively small footprints, nearshore habitats are critical for coastal jobs, cultures, and resilience. They are also some of the most vulnerable. Focusing conservation closer to shore will bring benefits for coastal communities, but also its own set of political and social challenges

Less than 1% of the US population lives in Hawaii and the U.S. Pacific territories, yet these islands are home to 99% of the marine protected areas in the country. This is a big gap, but also a big opportunity to make ocean conservation more effective and equitable (2/5)
