This project was approved under FAST-41, meaning it had expedited permit approvals. It also had labor, domestic supply chain, power offtake agreements for communities attached to it... meaning a whole lot of high quality American jobs and affordable energy just went up in flames.

We hope that these examples can be a blueprint for a more effective approach that centers the importance of nearshore habitats and smart state/local policy. Under an administration that is rolling back environmental protections and funding, state leadership will be even more crucial. (5/6)

Despite their relatively small footprints, nearshore habitats are critical for coastal jobs, cultures, and resilience. They are also some of the most vulnerable. Focusing conservation closer to shore will bring benefits for coastal communities, but also its own set of political and social challenges

Less than 1% of the US population lives in Hawaii and the U.S. Pacific territories, yet these islands are home to 99% of the marine protected areas in the country. This is a big gap, but also a big opportunity to make ocean conservation more effective and equitable (2/5)
