Superb Lyrebirds in rainforests are often accompanied by this fellow, hopping around and collecting any of small invertebrates which are disturbed in the vigorous leaf raking. This is the Yellow-throated Scrubwren, a comensal of the lyrebird and one of the forest's most fascinating species. #birding

The Rufous Fantail, a beautiful summer migrant in Sydney forests right now. These chirpy chaps mostly forage in denser vine tangles and shrubbery where they use their fanned tails and wings to disturb small invertebrates. However they will also sally from a perch too. #birding #birds #nature

Rosella with blue grey wings outstretched and pale yellow chest in full view. There is a red patch across its beak and a blue chin patch. The setting is my black worm farm with a few pale red geraniums and assorted greenery.

What a strange naming convention.

Photograph of a female Gang-gang Cockatoo - a grey parrot with light grey beak and orange/yellow edges on its neck and breast feathers. It appears to be nibbling on a dead branch, but was actually climbing it and using its beak as a hand (as parrots tend to do). In this light its eye looks brown.

Same subject, but different lighting and pose. This is a more conventional bird portrait, with the cockatoo's back to the camera but the head turned side-on. Its soft, willowy crest is raised and its eyes appear much darker in this light. Its grey back feathers have light grey edges and thin yellow bars.

A pair of Gang-gang Cockatoos have stopped by a few times this week! The male is camera shy, but I managed to get a few shots of the female.
