British Academy Postdoctoral Fellowship โ€“ call for Expressions of Interest open

The School is now inviting expressions of interest for candidates interested in the BA Postdoctoral Fellowship. Please consider directing any outstanding early career scholars in your network who are eligible to apply (see below) to our Postdoctoral Opportunities page.

The deadline for EoIs is 4th August 2025.

Next Wednesday July 16th at 1pm the School is running an online information session for applicants. Prospective applicants should email history-research@qmul.ac.uk to request the link.

Eligibility criteria
Applicants must be within three years of their successful viva voce examination. For this round of competition, applicants are expected to have completed their viva voce between 1 April 2023 and 1 April 2026. Exemption from this criterion may be granted for reasons occurring after the date of the viva voce examination such as: maternity leave, illness, family commitments etc but this must be confirmed with the BA prior to application.
Applicants must be a British citizen or EEA national OR have completed a doctorate at a UK university. Any applicant who does not fall into one of these categories must demonstrate a strong prior association with the UK academic community, for example through a previous period of non-permanent employment (for a minimum of 12 months) at a UK university.
Applicants must not have held a permanent academic post in an institution of higher education at any time in their career (exemption may be granted if a permanent role is below 0.5FTE).

Unlike the Leverhulme scheme, candidates cannot ordinarily resubmit (unless invited to do so by the BA) unless they reach second stage โ€“ so unless they have an exceedingly strong publication profile, candidates who are very recent graduates will not usually be competitive. They are welcome to submit an EoI, but they may well be encouraged to wait a year before applying.
