I read a book of Connie Willis stories which included a reprint of a speech she gave, in which she said she got interested in sci-fi when she first read a Robert Heinlein in which the character was reading 3 Men in a Boat by Jerome J Jerome.

The disconnect is pretty jarring. There is a similar effect on a different horrific topic in Prophet Song by Paul Lynch. It was... hard to read.
