That's a great idea! They do it in Bruges, and restrict the use of cars in the centre.

One day, Oxford Street in London will look like this...

(And soon after, so will Princes Street in Edinburgh and probably South Bridge too, I devoutly hope!)

Today was one of my favourite lectures, on how evidence influences debates.

Case A: 79 people died as a consequence of smart motorways (2010-2024). That's sufficient to pause the policy.

Case B: In the first year of the Welsh 20mph scheme 900 fewer people were injured. There's still contestation.

We must stop victim blaming after road deaths The way in which these incidents are reported can make it seem that victims are the agents of their own demise, writes Ciaran Cannon

Journalists call for language that recognises human agency, avoids speculation, & refrains from calling collisions β€œaccidents” ... They remind journalists not to present vehicles as if they act independently, but to identify drivers

Trudeau named not reforming the voting system as his big regret. Starmer shouldn't repeat his mistake.

The stakes are now much higher than just who wins the next election.

When there's such a disconnect between how people vote and who wins seats, trust in democracy is at risk.

UK could raise nearly Β£2bn by taxing SUVs in line with European countries, study shows Thinktank says an β€˜SUV loophole’ means UK buyers pay up to 20 times less tax on biggest models than in neighbouring nations Taxing Britain’s SUVs in line with other European countries could raise almost Β£2bn a year for the public finances, research has shown. The Transport & Environment thinktank has urged the government to use the autumn budget to bring in a levy on the largest vehicles, which it said would reflect the damage they caused to the environment and infrastructure. We need more pedestrian only streets!

They increase business and more importantly provide a great cultural space for the community to rally around

They also show that a community is willing to prioritize people over cars!

Paris Street filled without outdoor seating during the pandemic

Paris Street filled without outdoor seating during the pandemic

To ensure cars didn’t just take back ownership of Paris streets as the pandemic was ending (like they did in so many cities), Mayor @annehidalgo.bsky.social made sure that 60k parking spaces and many streets were permanently transformed with restaurant seating, people-places, greening, & bike-lanes.
