Civil rights pioneer Ida B. Wells said that βthe way to right wrongs is to turn the light of truth upon them.β
As communities across the country come together in action, we would like to highlight a few data tools doing just that β helping to keep people informed and safe during this time of fear.

What This Means in Practice.
In New York City, the mayor appoints Criminal Court Judges to 10-year terms. Our findings suggest that replacing a single former law enforcement judge with one that has neither law enforcement nor legal service experience would, over that term, result in: ~$8.7M in taxpayer savings detention costs, ~$6M less in cash bail imposed on defendants and families, ~65 fewer people detained, and ~17 years of jail time avoided.
