I was shocked when I first saw these results from standard climate models used in IPCC reports: for high emissions, the Atlantic overturning circulation #AMOC shuts down in all 9 models that ran past 2100, and is well on the way to shutdown by 2100.

The bank of the Seine in Paris used to be space for cars. Now for several years it’s been a special place for people in a city making more & more of them. All it took was leadership. In times of all the negative and concerning geopolitical developments, it’s heartening to see so much progress and potential at the local level. A huge thanks to Anne Hidalgo, David Belliard, and the entire team for their courage and dedication.

Creating 500 more of these micro-paradises would improve the lives of so many more people and families. After all, the city belongs to the people, not the cars.

The pedestrian street in my neighborhood has been an incredible blessing for my family. In space-constrained Paris, this is where my kids play football with their friends, learn to ride their bikes, and paint on the street. It’s a space free of pollution, noise, and the dangers of cars.

The next major step in Paris’ transformation is the expansion of green spaces and the pedestrianization of approximately 500 streets (around 5–8 streets per quartier), which will be up for vote this Sunday.

Eight years later, the transformation is remarkable: Cyclists are everywhere, even on those same rainy winter days. Place de la Bastille, along with other former traffic-heavy hotspots, has evolved into a welcoming space for gathering and even in urban forests, such as the Place de Catalogne.

When I moved from cycling-friendly Berlin to Paris 8 years ago, I didn’t feel safe riding my bike at first. I stuck to the few designated cycle lanes and avoided major roundabouts like Place de la Bastille. On rainy winter days, I’d encounter perhaps one or two other cyclists on my commute to work.

Paris is transforming for the better at an impressive pace, and the City Hall is proposing to accelerate this progress even further. Parisians have an important choice to make this coming Sunday: For or against more green space and pedestrianising 500 streets. Here’s my story:
