I still think one of the best ways to adapt Junji Ito would be to create a motion comic. Stills of his art with cutouts moving across. Like the show Yamishibai

Oh holy shit, the legs twist around but the upper body stays put. I think the legs also swapped places in a frame?

Branlin (a large bluish grey dragon) hunched over Isaac (a small orange cat person) shielding him from some kind of burning acid attack. Branlin's siblings and other spectators watch shocked from outside the arena.

Defiance

Comic concept description: Branlin, a tall silvery dragon, and Isaac, a small cat person, are walking up a small mountain to visit the grave of Isaac's deceased mother. Page 1 Dialogue: Branlin: "Hey Isaac? Where are we going?" Isaac: "Just paying someone a visit before we leave... It won't take long..."

Isaac lingers in front of his mom's grave for a long time before speaking up Isaac: "Hi mom. It's been a while hasn't it! A lot's happened since my last visit. I got into some trouble on a trip to Aurema and met some new friends, who I've been traveling with ever since!" He gestures to Branlin "This is Branlin btw!" Branlin: "um, hi." Isaac: "-One of the new friends I mentioned. You'd like her..."

Isaac: "She's strong, and clever and creative and thoughtful... and kind... and... a-anyways!!" "I just wanted to let you know I'm doing my best to be brave. I hope I can make you proud someday" Branlin: "Do you think she can really h-" Isaac (cutting her off): "No. She's not even really buried here. Not like there was much of a body left to bury anyways, but it's a nice thought, isn't it?" As Isaac stares silently at the grave, tears well up in Branlin's eyes and drop on top of Isaac's head with a loud plop sound.

Isaac looks up surprised at branlin who reaches out and pulls him into a tight hug as she cries: "I'm sorry I'm sorry... I-" Isaac cuts her off again with a softer tone: "Branlin..." Branlin: "I know, I know..." Isaac: "Thank you."

Family Visit

Image Description: Branlin is a tall anthropomorphic bluish grey dragon with large horns that are splitting to reveal a platinum interior. She has scrap armor made from modified pieces of metal and shields used by smaller species. She also wields a giant spear with a broken great-sword blade as the point. Text Description: Branlin is the runaway heir to the Dragon Kingdom. She lives in the woods and helps travelers passing by (so long as they don't run away from her). She is also extremely afraid of heights and only flies in emergency situations.

I would just love to see her animated to more dialogue clips! The facial expressions, bodily gestures, and bounce to it all is amazing to see put together
