They would have to identify where they can realistically finish in the top two, train voters on who their candidates are in the absence of party labels, and prepare to fight misinformation or decoy candidacies immediately.

For Democrats to counter this, they would need strong message discipline, early candidate consolidation, and clear outreach to independents.

The overall strategy would be to dominate the field through numbers, funding, and timing so that by the time the general election arrives, the only names left are Republican.

Finally, Republicans could use the open-primary structure to drain Democratic resources. With more races looking competitive on paper, Democrats could be drawn into spending heavily just to survive the first round, leaving them weaker for the general election.

In low-information races such as county offices and school boards, removing the Democratic label would leave personality and name recognition as the main factors, both of which tend to favor long-entrenched local Republicans.

They could also push for implementation rules that make life harder for underfunded challengers. Adjusting filing fees, calendar deadlines, or ballot order could make a difference when party labels are less prominent.

Another likely move would be to target independent voters. SQ 836 gives independents full access to the primary, but Republicans could use church networks, conservative media, and local groups to brand one of their own as a “reasonable moderate,”

They might flood races with so-called moderates who siphon votes from the party’s base while disciplined GOP voters line up behind one or two clear favorites. They could then use early advertising to damage the strongest Dems before the primary, ensuring the runoff is Republican versus Republican.

Republicans could also run or quietly support multiple candidates who sound centrist or independent, all aimed at splitting the small Democratic vote.

That would erase the Democratic brand from the fall ballot in many areas and cut off the chance to reach low-information voters who only pay attention in November.

The most obvious way to do that is in deep-red legislative and county districts. With Republicans making up most of the electorate, two GOP candidates could easily finish first and second, leaving no Democrat in the general election.

If Republicans want to use State Question 836 to their advantage, the most damaging scenario for Democrats would be one where the GOP turns an “open primary” into a mechanism for locking Democrats out of the November ballot altogether.

I am a solid NO on State Question 836. There are too many traps for Republicans to weaponize the vote to eliminate Democrats.

At the same time, they are working to gut the Affordable Care Act, slash SNAP and WIC, and undermine Medicare, Medicaid, and Social Security. Every safety net that protects working families is on the chopping block.

The same Republicans who exploded the national debt by handing tax breaks to the wealthy are now holding working families hostage.

The shutdown means cutting off paychecks for federal workers, closing food programs for children, and halting safety inspections that keep the public safe.

THE CRUELTY IS THE POINT

Republican leaders, following Trump’s lead, are continuing to push the government shutdown.

This isn’t about budgets or efficiency. It’s about power and punishment.

The shutdown is not about saving money. It’s about saving face. It’s the politics of chaos, meant to distract from failure and blame everyone else for the mess created by Trump and his enablers.

That’s still the playbook. Keep Americans angry, keep them divided, and they won’t notice who’s robbing them. While people argue over who deserves help, the wealthy take everything.

As Lyndon B. Johnson once said, “If you can convince the lowest white man he’s better than the best colored man, he won’t notice you’re picking his pocket. Hell, give him somebody to look down on, and he’ll empty his pockets for you.”

Behind him stands a Republican Party that has spent decades dividing America. They call it “small government,” but it’s really a war on working families. By attacking Social Security, Medicare, and Medicaid, they weaken the safety nets that protect the poor, the elderly, and the disabled.

This is not leadership. It’s emotional collapse dressed up as strategy. The same man who promised to “drain the swamp” is now drowning the country in confusion, anger, and fear.

Every time he loses control, he creates chaos. Every time the truth corners him, he changes the subject. The shutdown is not about policy. It’s about ego, distraction, and revenge.
