With everything happening in the US right now, how safe are scientific conferences for foreign participants in the US? I think this is something we have to discuss as a scientific community. I am hesitating to register for US meetings due to the unpredictable situation. Others who feel the same?

By definition, numerical weather models require international data. The atmosphere knows no geopolitical boundaries: any model that begins and ends at its country’s border is unable to generate reliable predictions until after a weather system crosses its boundaries. Which defeats the purpose!

We had a visitor to the yard this morning! This bobcat had a seat next to our garden for a few minutes. What a gorgeous animal--this was of such a size that when it passed under the window, I first thought it was a small coyote.

Had a feeling of panic about LA for the first time since this all started, because I consider it to be my home, but then I thought about my work as a climate writer and the future and kind of ended up at acceptance. I can only control so much, and it's all part of a difficult journey ahead of us

I want to take a moment to say thank you to all the firemen who are risking their lives to save others in these dire moments.

The firefighters are putting in long, long hours and making little if any headway, due to the high winds.

This is another horrific event caused by climate change.

Milo has made the top of the fridge his favorite spot, perhaps based on a nearby heating vent. Moreover Milo is to be congratulated for dropping below 20 pounds on his diet and therefore less likely to damage the fridge. He feels deprived tho.
