Close-up of three white entwined snowdrop flowers hanging from slender green stems, their nodding blooms softly lit against a blurred green and white background with pale speckles of light.
1st-2nd February is Imbolc, a Gaelic festival celebrating the impending lambing season and the birth of new life. A Scottish legend tells that the arrival of snowdrops infuriates Beira, Queen of Winter, so she brings frost and snow as she battles to keep her hold. #FolkloreSunday

A collage of six pictures from my tiny garden. Stars of the show are the Hellebores. The dark double one is a recent acquisition. The other one is one from Ashwood Nurseries. The small pictures are the tiny white, sweetly scented flowers of Sarcococca, emerging Crocus flowers (I must buy more this year), a white Camellia bud and tiny white flowers of sweetly scented winter Honeysuckle.

Pictures from my tiny garden which has been totally soaked this week. I have been able to be out in it a couple of times and have seen bulbs growing. It wonβt be long till they flower.
There are quite a few flowers on this hellebore 'Penny's Pink'! And with tall stems to enjoy them. Mine are drooping ( rain)

#SixOnSaturday saw snow finally meltingπ« my seed order has a dark theme this year, birds were everywhere, greenhouse was packed and full of flowers, and my poppy pots should germinate now that the snow melted.

A collage of six photographs of flowers, comprising: a purple Iris reticulata with feather like petals sticking up and lipped petals marked with black spots against a splash of white; a clump of pale purple narrow Crocus buds; the underneath of two white Snowdrops showing green striped markings; a large petalled purple Viola with a white & yellow centre marked with fine back lines; small white bristle like flowers of a Sarcococca with dark green leathery leaves; a close up of an Iris reticulata showing lipped petals with a splash of dark purple and white with dark spots.

The violet, a symbol of modesty and loyalty, is another birth flower for those born in February.
βThe violet in her green-wood bower,
Where birchen boughs with hazel mingle,
May boast itself the fairest flower
In glen, or copse, or forest dingle.β

Collage of February scenes: clusters of lilac crocuses rising through leaf litter; pale pink daphne flowers among glossy green leaves; a blue tit perched on a branch; a great tit on mossy twigs; close-up of white snowdrops with green markings; vivid purple iris reticulata; and a carpet of delicate pink cyclamen.
Will the winter never be over,
Will the dark days never go?
Must the buttercup and the clover
Be always hid under the snow?
Ah, lend me your little ear, love!
Hark! 'tis a beautiful thing;
The weariest month of the year, love,
Is shortest and nearest to spring.

A collage of twelve close-up photographs showing the textures of tree bark and fungi at Anglesey Abbey. Each panel features different natural patterns, including peeling bark, cracked surfaces, pale lichen patches and layered fungi in muted earthy tones.
After sharing a bark collage a few weeks ago and seeing how much you enjoyed it, I thought Iβd share some more. Close details from Anglesey Abbey last weekend, where bark, lichen and fungi create endlessly varied patterns.

Two early-flowering purple irises in bloom, their slender petals marked with yellow and white near the centre, rising from thin stems against a softly blurred green background.
The early-flowering spring iris is a February birth flower, named for Iris, the radiant Greek goddess of the rainbow and messenger between heaven and earth. Long linked with brighter days and good news, the iris symbolises courage, faith, wisdom and valour in folklore tradition.

Things to see in and around my garden this weekend, a budding blue grape hyacinth, a trio of snowdrops, a golden crocus, a crunchy dry hydrangea flowerhead from last year, a fresh hellebore in white and red, and an orange and red polyanthus primula
Saturday salutations sky-folk, if it's still winter it's LATE winter, with all sorts of things starting to happen outside (see alt-text for details).
