Tarisland has shut down, and nobody seems to have noticed.

That's the problem with MMOs today, in my opinion. For 20 years the same formula has been copied. We've already played the game. They all look the same at this point.

What we're getting now are reskins of WoW.

The question we should be asking ourselves is why. I've been trying out some of the more avante garde products lately, and I see some great ideas being hit hard by the same core gameplay loops. I quickly end up feeling like I've already played that game.

Thanks! I’m going to give this a deep dive and share with my dev team.

Same. Being able to solve problems and communicate clearly is what made my career. Degrees are great, and I have a few of them now, but I get them to show credibility for what I believe in. We also had those 5.25 floppies. Some flat mates of mine in Uni regularly changed audio tracks.

I got my wife a DNA kit last year for Xmas. She's since had to stop telling people she's Norwegian. 😀

The issue of uncertainty is why I think MMO's over the last 20 years have had difficulty. Aside from the large franchises, they are viewed as high risk. Why? They offer nothing new, and have reduced risk down to essentially waiting your turn.

@raphkoster.bsky.social along with Ted Castronova, are probably the smartest people in online game development.

Yet their ideas have been regularly sidelined in favor of more extractive game mechanics that don't necessarily create fun and reward economic activity so much as create repetition.

Agreed. In my house we had a C64 and mostly educational games. Eventually I started getting copies of the “fun” games from friends. But the foundations were always in learning. We’re probably not producing that kid safe type of game with our main title, but we do recognize the need.

This was nice to see. We’re trying to create a product that is both fun and allows for a meaningful way to experience culture and human perspectives not as a tourist, but as a participant in allegory.

Founder of Tumeke here (full disclosure) - I am primarily a PVE player but always feel something is lost without unrestricted PvP on the same server. Chokepoints and lack of direction and proper play outlets can cause problems, though.

Wow typos coupled with me not wearing my glasses. I did not hear a “bear” there are no bears in NZ. I heard a beat. And apparently was autocorrected to bear just like what happened now, and didn’t see it.

This is important because indigenous people are more than just a flavor pack you can bolt on to whatever product you choose.

They are real people, with real perspectives. Flattening them into convenient tropes is exploitative.

Sold-off Wellington town hall furniture still had value - restorer "Somebody has just taken it upon themselves to just empty out the storage facility just because they can," says an antique furniture restorer.

Honestly, what do people expect when they pay workers and contractors below market wages? NZ wages are 30% below international averages for the same work. You get what you pay for.

Same. I loved AC2, and when they revived it as a companion to AC subs I reactivated AC to play it again. The world had alot of potential, and the Empyrian expansion was pretty cool.

Sure. Cant begrudge the crown space to live. Those folks have been here a while. Wish they thought the same about us and would keep their mits off our land. Would be nice.

The issue here is one where the government is taking land away from an indigenous authority that has held claim to it.

This is an arbitrary act by a colonial power exercising colonial authority.

Full stop.

I’m all for an exchange of different opinions and honest discussion. The discussion seemed disingenuous to me. Like it was using “bad mechanics” and “lore doesn’t matter” as a proxy for racism.

Yep. I got dogpiled for saying indigenous in my game product. Suddenly it “had bad mechanics” and “was a DEI cringe fest” despite it being inclusive, not typically tribal (sic-fi), and not discussing mechanics at all, just peoples thoughts on lore concepts. It was one of those “wow” experiences.

What are your thoughts here? Should culture fit the game mechanics, or should the game mechanics work with the culture?

Memory is a funny thing. Out and about tonight at Auckland Night Market I heard a bear. This song popped in my head.. I haven’t heard it in probably 20 years.

Well I wasn’t going to say it :)

The problem is much of the market research hinges not on who’s interested, but on who’s loud.

Leveling Up Representation: Depictions of People of Color in Video Games | PBS The majority of young gamers are people of color but representation in video games has, at least historically, been lacking. Learn how that's evolved.

Why is Reddit so hostile against games featuring people of color and indigenous perspectives, calling them “DEI cringe fests” if the majority of gamers are people of color - and why isn’t the industry taking action?

Labour wants to expand gaming subsidy After a two-year policy drought, Labour's annouced its third policy in three days.

Game creation in NZ is approaching $1bn in annual revenue. It only makes sense to want to keep that money cycling here, instead of moving elsewhere.

Agree?
