Freshwater scientist in California. Undecided about how much science content I’ll post here. For now mostly art and pretty things.

I’m just trying to picture a world where the Times would run a similar article about a) a male politician or b) a Republican.

Is this news or opinion? It’s increasingly hard to tell at the LA Times.

Australia's 'mushroom murderer' got a life sentence. Prosecutors say it's not enough Erin Patterson hosted four of her estranged husband's relatives for lunch in July 2023. Three of them died of death cap mushroom poisoning. A jury found her guilty this July, after a nine-week trial.

Just read about “lying about cancer” here. The story is wild!

You may have heard my arguments against the Electoral College before. Here’s a new one the Founders never anticipated:

If the President is elected by popular vote, he probably wouldn’t selectively punish entire states for voting against him.

A large lake with >100 artificial islands appearing in a uniform grid.

Do I have any experts out there who can tell me what’s going on with this lake in the Modoc National Forest?

These islands are each about 40 m across and appears to be made of rock and are vegetated.

The entire water body does not appear on NF maps.

I’m in no way supportive of the use of AI for this, but there are times when science writers need to: emphasize simplicity over detail, stop understating our conclusions, focus on a single message.

It’s food for thought, at least.

‘The news devastated me’: Pennsylvania NPR station will be first in the US to go dark following Trump’s cuts A public media organization in a university town just a few hours northwest of Philadelphia is set to be the first in the country to go dark after the Trump administration stripped away federal funding for NPR and PBS.

The first public media station to go dark thanks to Trump’s cutoff of federal funding to public media is a 70 year old station in Pennsylvania. https://loom.ly/IjOHdzI
