The umbrella effect is something Iβve been taught and talked about with students. The idea that conserving one species will inadvertently help other species in the same ecosystem. In a lot of cases, the charismatic megafaunaβs management plan encompasses huge ranges and systems of interdependence.

As I say every year on Women In Science Day:
There are unfathomably many ways to be a woman.
There are unfathomably many ways to be a scientist.
Attacks on women and attacks on science go together, and it takes strength across the spectra of gender and science to stop them from breaking us down.

We cannot stand idly by as DEI and environmental justice initiatives are reduced to conjecture. These are the cornerstones of imagining a better world for everyone. Equity is not a hypothetical it is mandatory for our worldβs future. Every person deserves clean air and water, for generations.

Trumpβs executive order that utilizes the term environmental justice in quotations is a travesty. There is no βenvironmental justiceβ - we know that climate change and other environmental issues disproportionately affect those who are the least responsible for the climate catastrophe.

Lack of modes to effectively teach environmental and scientific literacy is why we have students disconnected from how they learn, their communities, and nature as a whole. Luckily, there are SO many things we can be doing and talking about with students to build these skills. #environmentalliteracy
