And it seems self-fulfilling that ‘more reporting on Sudan in UK media’ will have fewer vocal, influential Brit advocates - particularly at this time of nationalism and chauvinism, pretty much what @aphclarkson.bsky.social complains about in relation to (comparatively bountiful) coverage of the US

I think the answer is much closer to “both, and” rather than “either, or” but would be interesting to hear what people extremely motivated by either issue think

I do think ‘mass immigration’ enthusiasts often talk past immigration hawks, and when there is interaction it can be incredibly bad-tempered and unreflective. Will take these thoughts with me to Tory conference!

Very interesting, both your analysis of migration trends + government action/shifts, and how you feel about them

The perspective I bring, aside from my own politics, is living in areas with lots of established + recent migrants, and regularly working with them, so that strongly shapes my feelings

I admit that liberals like me might be very (dangerously?) naive on this score. I also think it’s an important principle to hold on to not to generalise about groups, even when it comes to decisions about immigration policy + when it looks bloody obvious there are big security risks

So (and I hope this doesn’t sound too much of a cop-out) I think you are generalising about societies like Syria + Iran. Yes values are different there in the way you describe, but middle-class migrants to UK may not hold the median values. And I think you are too pessimistic about integration

I cling to world I grew up in as a strong part of my identity! Almost my ethical compass. I expect people older + younger than me see the world differently. But then people almost exactly my age like Robert Jenrick do too 😂 (Maybe Jenrick is more imaginative + empathetic than me)

I think there’s an interesting philosophical Q about how much immigration control is a choice/felt to be a choice

In 90s/2000s there were free-market orthodoxies in the West and freedom of movement was integral to our EU membership. Now, UK is in a different position + the world looks different

Am no expert but think key points are 1) pull factors in immigration aren’t controllable, there was a “perfect storm” in 2020-22, 2) Decisions around the sort of Brexit we had, 3) Boris Johnson and his style in government - thoughtless, inconsistent, instinct for largesse + cosmopolitan, global UK

I’m ultra-liberal on immigration so aware of my biases… What makes me so uncomfortable is conflation of long-settled migrants, recent migrants and future migrants. I wish there was more clarity + sensitivity about this - and also self-reflection by liberals like me about v v high immigration levels

Do you think right-wing is a useful label for all the current supporters of Reform? Why do you think that immigration will necessarily be the top concern 3-4 years from now, when it wasn’t in 2021 or 2022 (health and the economy, and sometimes the environment were bigger concerns then)?

100% agree with you about encouraging pro-Pal movement to consider whether it is appropriate to continue with protests today (and yest), and also to confront anti-semitism unconditionally

But also v important imho not to impute to all members of Bath pro-Pal group those v ugly views on their feed

Hastening the end of HIGNFY? Why has this show, whatever its merits, stayed when so many other BBC programmes (and entire stations and services!) have been axed?
