Well as far as the kids go it hasn't been that huge of an issue until now but our oldest is getting to an age where the kind of things he wants to watch can be adjacent to subtly harmful or outright inappropriate material. So we're locking everything down before it becomes a huge issue.

This past week we've been setting up a media streaming PC using Kodi that will pull in our personal libraries plus select YouTube channels/partial channels. It isn't perfect but is pretty cool and certainly much better than letting your kids rawdog YouTube. Very 'why didn't we do this before?'

That feels like it was written by AI rather than a real conversation that happened involving a real human but unfortunately I suppose it is real.

Like I'm sure it was a rerun, too busy with the potatoes to actually check, but actually that makes it worse, one would think they might simply opt to not feature the cash cow of an individual whose life is now devoted to encouraging and enacting violence on vulnerable people.

ABC was running an episode of Hard Quiz tonight where one contestant's specialist topic was some Harry Potter nonsense. Maybe tomorrow we can look forward to someone on the program showing off their extensive knowledge of the artwork of Adolf Hitler.

I've had elladisenchanted.itch.io/minute-farms by @elladisenchanted.bsky.social sitting in my tabs to try for days and I finally played (more than) a few rounds in between editing some blog posts. It's the most stressed I've ever been planting virtual crops but in a really fun way. 🤭

Such a serendipitous moment of joy for me, I used to play the DOS version of Powerslave (or Exhumed) obsessively as a teen. I was terrible at it but I didn't have many games to choose from and I at least made glacial progress on that one over the years. 🤭

This is so deeply weird and doesn't even require AI: they could probably read better human-crafted summaries on Wikipedia.

Treating reading as a statistic to show off to others instead of thinking about what you personally get from it is... not a perspective I relate to in general!

Someone needs to introduce these people to the idea that they can just imagine an ending to a made-up story themselves if it bothers them so very much. But I think you're right and they probably couldn't do it either!

So glad to see you back here. It's an outrage that anyone trying to stand up to their abusers online is so frequently punished more harshly than the original abuser will ever be. But I still hope Rowling faces the consequences she's earned sooner rather than later.

Ah yes that was the one that ended up being two books in the end, for better or worse...

I'm amazed that people are still invested enough to be rude about it, it's been so long. They're just going to be unhappy when the books take substantially the same line as the series did in the end.

I do think working creatives who are in the (rare) position to be fully in control of their creative output owe people a tiny little bit if they've invested time and money into those creations. Just be honest and tell them maybe the TV show is it as far as closure on that part of the story goes.

Also I would never say such a thing to any creative person myself because, like, manners... but I am surprised by so much strident defence of GRRM. If he's going to turn up to fan events to soak in the adulation of fans those fans are going to want to ask about things of his they are fans of. 🤷

Although I will say I think Machin Shin was more sickening than any of the horrors GRRM came up with and I was both sorry and relieved they severely nerfed that little freak in the TV show.

Way to announce to a whole audience you didn't even read one or both of those series though, like maybe the latter half of Wheel of Time gets wildly hornier and more tasteless but as far as I've gotten suggesting the same guy could finish both series well is too improbable to be even a joke. 🤡

Yesterday's main claim to shame was accidentally putting the dishwasher in demo mode while I was trying to start a load of dishes and being unable to figure out how to turn it off.

At least the kids were delighted when it started playing Bach instead of washing dishes. 🤣

Our kid was upset to hear us talking about young people not being allowed to use marijuana which led to a few minutes of mutual ??? before we finally worked out he was confusing marijuana with Moana. Slight difference there... 🤣

I've seen a lot of discussion lately about not over-explaining a story and usually this grates on me because actually I really enjoy stories that explain things to me fully! But it does give me confidence with this story where a light touch was appropriate for the supernatural elements.

Finished another readthrough of my soon-to-be-published (hopefully) slice of life with mild sci-fi themes, Always A Way Back. I have one more little detail I want to tuck into the later story and some rough prose needs combing, but I think I'm almost ready to let go! 🎊 #writing

In light of the news this week I keep thinking about how @tayastorm.bsky.social's response to the existence of GitHub was, '...it's a hub for gits?' and that this pretty much cemented my disinterest in using it.

Unfortunately I started using GitLab instead... 🙃

Linux isn't so bad if you end up using it resentfully, at least then you only end up cursing it half as much when you discover a new thing that just doesn't work and when you ask around you get, 'you shouldn't be doing that, you should actually...'

I do remember the Xanth books and the richness of the world fondly though, the whole talent thing made for endless fun and one day I might even reread through the whole series, but I feel like I'd have to editorialise pretty hard if I wanted to read those to my kid any time soon.

I found Xanth books as a preteen and I kind of got that the panties stuff was supposed to be horny but it just grossed me out, eventually I read some of his non-Xanth books hoping they'd be less juvenile and unfortunately discovered he had also worked out more explicit ways to be juvenile.
